Smith, departed this life last Saturday morning, at about 6:30 o'clock, at the family residence, in the fourth ward, surrounded by loving relatives. The good old lady had been indisposed for several years and most of the winter medical aid had been sought to assist her. Not until the severe weather of the present month were there such marked signs of declination. The sudden cold change bore down on her weak physical condition and was more than she could stand. Physicians were on hand constantly to aid the patient, but of what use is human assistance for one who has outlived physical endurance? When the tenement of clay no longer responds to medical science and the spirit weary of its habitation, seeks that life which is eternal? And what is grander than the sight of dim, weary eyes closing in eternal sleep after so many years of toil and trials? Like the soft rays of the evening twilight before mother earth nestles down in the somber folds of night to slumber. While we all miss her, and there is a vacant chair in the household, she has left the influence of her loving, Christian spirit behind to be our guiding star, and the thought that such transition is only natural, and the law of him who created her, is like balm to the wounded hearts of those who mourn her departure. The deceased was born in Greene county, Ohio, near the village of Zenia, and was 78 years, 10 months and 11 days old at the time of her death. In 1837 she was married to Mr. Wm. M. Smith who survives her. To this happy union were born six children. From the old home in Ohio Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved to Marion county, Indiana. In February, 1875, they came to Carroll which has been their home ever since. A son, A. E. Smith, long since dead, was at one time a prominent business man of this city. Besides Mrs. L.E. Mendenhall, of Des Moines and Mrs. E.K. Hobbs, of Lake City, daughters, there are eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In 1857 Mrs. Smith became a member of the Christian faith and had been a constant member to the close of her life. She did that which she considered her duty both to her Master in whom she had implicit faith and to her neighbor as herself. And the blessings showered on her and her loving husband were plainly visible in their simple habitation, peaceful and quiet. The funeral services took place from the family residence at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, Elder Ross conducting the ceremonies. The remains were laid to rest in the city cemetery.
