Read More	Jan 27, 1888 - Carroll Sentinel - Aaron E. Smith passed quietly away at his home in this city, last Monday morning. His death had been momentarily expected for days, and he was conscious to the last and realized fully that the end was near, and summoned his aged parents and all those near and dear to him but a short time before the hour of dissolution. His illness was a long siege of intense suffering, for he has not been in good health for several years. He has always believed that his health was broken by blood poisoning resulting from having teeth extracted, in the year 1881. He was very ill and near death's door at the time, but recovered, though slowly. After this he was seized with rheumatism, and was of then confined to his bed for days, suffering greatly. Nearly two years ago he sold out his hardware business here and with his wife spent some time in Southern Kansas, Colorado and California, but the change did not benefit him and he returned here last spring. Since then he has been able to leave his house but a few times. He sank gradually, and toward the last could not receive any nourishment at all. He leaves a wife but no children. Mr. Smith was a native of Ohio, and was 47 years of age. He was married in Indiana in 1863, his wife being a sister of E.E. and Jas. W. Hobbs, of Jasper township, and six years later joined the pioneers and settled on a farm in the northeast part of this county. He moved to Carroll early in the 70's, and was one of our first grain and lumber dealers, in partnership with his father. When the Green Bay company came into this country he sold to them, and was out of active trade until about three years ago he purchased a hardware stock here. He was a man of very bright and happy disposition, overflowing with good humor, and made many friends. He has been honored with many positions of trust and responsibility, and always discharged every duty faithfully and well. A kind and generous friend and neighbor, a man tolerant and liberal in every respect, he will be mourned by many who will sincerely sympathise with the sorrowing wife. Mr. Smith was a member of the I.O.O.F., and it was by his request that the funeral services were in charge of the fraternity. During his long illness the members of the order were unremitting in their care, and nothing was undone or unprovided that the sick man could desire. Both Jas. W. and E.K. Hobbs spent a good share of the past few weeks at the home, and were present at his death. The funeral, held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, was largely attended, a representation from the Odd Fellows lodge at Manning and other points being present, and the sermon by Elder Wood, of Scranton, was an eloquent tribute to the character of the deceased brother.
