Description	:	William was one of our first grain and lumber dealers in Carroll in the early 1870's, and was in partnership with his son, AE Smith. Aug 27, 1907 - Carroll Sentinel - Sunday word was received of the death of Wm. Smith, father-in-law of Mrs. A.E. Smith of this city. The deceased died in Des Moines Saturday night of old age. From the earliest settlement of Carroll until six years ago this fall, Mr. Smith resided in this city. Aug 27, 1907 - Carroll Sentinel - Sunday word was received of the death of Wm. Smith, father-in-law of Mrs. A.E. Smith of this city. The deceased died in Des Moines Saturday night of old age. From the earliest settlement of Carroll until six years ago this fall, Mr. Smith resided in this city. He was the father of AE Smith, who was at one time engaged in the hardware business here and remained a citizen until his death. The deceased was in his 87th year having been born in Ohio in 1820. His wife died a number of years ago and the greater part of the time since then he made his home with his daughter in Des Moines. There were six children of the family, two boys and four girls, all of whom are now dead with the exception of two daughters. They are Mrs. Mary Margaret Hobbs of Lanesboro and Catherine Mendinghaw of Des Moines. The old settlers of this city will all remember Wm. Smith who for many years made his home on the south side in the fourth ward. He was a kind, patient man, always greeting his friends with words of good cheer. He was universally respected and esteemed by those with whom he came in contact. He lived out the fullness of years in a retired Christian life passing from the stage of action as gently as the falling shades approach on a summers eve. The body was brought to this city for burial and was today laid to rest beside those of his faithful, Christian wife and son who had preceded him. The services were held at the Baptist church this morning at 11 o'clock and were conducted by the Christian church of which he was a devout and faithful member during the greater portion of his life. Rev. 0.E. Roberts of Lake City delivered the sermon.
