She was born May 26, 1943 in Cuyler, Florida to the late Admiral Dewey Altman and Carrie Williams Altman. Phylis was a lifelong resident of Baker County and graduated from Baker County High School. She was born May 26, 1943 in Cuyler, Florida to the late Admiral Dewey Altman and Carrie Williams Altman. Phylis was a lifelong resident of Baker County and graduated from Baker County High School. Shortly after graduation, Phylis attended Jones College to further her education. She enjoyed her longtime career as an Aide in the Kitchen Ward at North East Florida State Hospital where she worked for many years until retiring in 1980. She married the love of her life, Jack Upchurch, on January 6, 1980 and they enjoyed 36 happy years of marriage. Phylis was a member and the Clerk at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Callahan, Florida. Phylis not only enjoyed attending but also singing at her church. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister who loved her family and grandkids dearly. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack Upchurch; siblings, Hubert Altman, J.B. Altman, Morris Altman, Willie Mae Raulerson, Mallaveene Crawford; grandson, Justen Ray Christie. Phylis is survived by her daughters, Tina (Dennis) Christie-Whaley of Glen St. Mary, FL and Sonja (Ronnie) Cason of Starke, FL; siblings, Albert Dewey (Laverne) Altman, Wilbert (Evelyn) Altman, George Ray (Billie) Altman, Lonzie Altman, Margarett (Raymond) Fletcher, Peggy (Bill) Keves, Pearlie Taylor and Linda Tyre; grandchildren, Lauren Nikkole (Derreck) Holian, Brock Anthony (Erika) Christie, Ashlei Breanna Jones, Tiffani Jones, Danielle (Will) Parker; great grandchildren, Rylee Rice, Aurora Jones, Avery Holian, Ryan Murphy, Trent Murphy, Taylor Bertie, Sophia Sykes, Mason Chanell, Lane Brown and Justin Brown. A Celebration of Phylis’s life will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at North Prong Primitive Baptist Church (Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church) in Taylor, Florida with Elder Albert Altman officiating. Interment will follow at North Prong Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 27, 2020 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
