Most Riel was born to Henry William Most and Myra Margaret Snodgrass Most on July 16, 1922, on a farm near Ohiowa and passed away Jan. 27, 2004, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 81 years, six months and 11 days. She was one of three children in the family. Phyllis grew up around the Geneva area and attended the Congregational Church. She worked as a telephone operator at the Fairmont Airbase and also at the Lincoln Telephone Office. She was a longtime sale’s clerk at Hested’s and Elaine’s in Geneva, better known as the “dime store.” She was confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Geneva September 7, 1958, and her confirmation verse was “Jesus says, “I am the vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in me and I in Him the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5. Phyllis was married to Arthur Riel of Geneva on September 16, 1950 in Lincoln and to them three children were born: Paula, Susan and John. She was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and a member of Ladies Aid. She was a big help to Grace Lutheran School, even after her grandchildren no longer attended, offering her sewing talents in whatever way was needed. She had a firm faith in God and was not afraid to share her beliefs. Grandma “Phyll” was especially proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Noel Behrendt, serving in the Armed Forces, Caleb Henry and Dawn Henry and step-granddaughter, Billie Jo-Mead, Rebekah Riel and Katie and Hannah Riel; great-grandchildren, Skiler and Ethan, Laura, who lovingly referred to her as Granny Great. Later in life, she met her granddaughter Stephanie and husband Chris and their two children Traben and Brighton and welcomed them to her family. She loved sports and anything her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were involved in…wrestling, track, basketball, softball, band, choir, plays and on and on. You could often find her at home in her chair, keeping score of the baseball game on TV. She knew the players, innings and outs. If you couldn’t find her home, she was probably either at Jill’s having coffee, working, at a grandchild’s event, out with her “classmates” or at a Saltdogs game. It made it easy to buy Grandma a Christmas present. Saltdogs baseball tickets were always a “hit.” She sat through many of her granddaughter’s softball games in the heat, cold, wind and rain. Grandma Phyll was usually there sitting in her chair cheering the team on and sometimes helping the umpires out as well. Phyllis enjoyed working, her latest job being at Hinrichs Wood Shop. At the age of 81 she’d say “it gets me out of the house and it’s good for my mind.” The Hinrichs family became part of hers. She enjoyed her Sundays. Going to church then out to eat with her special friends. As well as every month getting together with her high school classmates and going out to eat. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Grandma Phyll, Granny Great has hit a homerun to heaven! Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Myra Most; her husband, Arthur; son-in-law, Bill Henry; and brother-in-law Otto Waters. She is survived by her children, Paula Henry, Susan Rippe and husband Russ, John Riel and wife Joan; sisters, Fern Waters and Ethel Benish and husband Orville; sisters-in-law, Helen Everts and husband Harold and Doris Philippi and husband, Rex; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Grace Lutheran Church in Geneva on Monday, Feb. 2, with Pastor Matt Zimpelmann officiating. Liz Baumann accompanied the congregation, who sang “Lift High the Cross”, “On Eagles Wings”, “I Know that my Redeemer Lives” and “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” Casket bearers were Caleb Henry, Kurt Philippi, Joseph Wood, Gale Waters, Bruce Waters, Ken Aksamit, Rod Hinrichs and Butch Hinrichs.
