He departed this life on January 27, 2019, at the age of 92 years, 7 months, and 12 days at his home in Winona, with his loving wife and family by his side. Read More	Married Sept. 22, 1989 ------------- John James Lindsey, son of John L. and Minnie (Taylor) Lindsey was born on June 15, 1926, near Winona, Missouri. He departed this life on January 27, 2019, at the age of 92 years, 7 months, and 12 days at his home in Winona, with his loving wife and family by his side. At the early age of five, John was bitten by a horse in the mouth. He suffered a hole in his windpipe and only skin held his mouth in place. After recovering from this accident, he started school at Pleasant Hill, close to Houses Creek, attending there until he was in the sixth grade. He had a lot of good memories of the school and his teacher, Walter Bradford. He later attended school in Winona until May 1944. At that time, during World War II, he voluntarily enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country for the next 23 years. In 1945, his father accepted his high school diploma for him because he was in the service. During World War II, he attended boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois then traveled to California and caught a ship to Pearl Harbor. He was assigned to the USS Catskill where he served out the rest of World War II. During this time they made invasions in Leyte Gulf, Luzon, in the Philippines after that Okinawa, where more people were killed than all other Islands during WWII. He was sitting in Manila and had troops aboard, ready to hit Japan when President Truman authorized dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan. During this time, John was awarded five battle stars. He served on the USS Cambria, USS Duxbury Bay, and the USS Harlon R. Dixon. He was in the service during Korea and Vietnam; he served three years on Azores Island, two years in Iran, while the Shah was in power. He also served two years in Kodiak, Alaska where he learned to love the state. In 1951, John was married to Salina Clark. To this union two children were born, Michael and Elaina. John retired in 1967 as a first class chief petty officer, he then returned to Kodiak, Alaska, and worked at the satellite tracking station for three years. Later, he returned to Missouri, where he bought a farm and started raising cattle. In 1981, John met Nancy Brawley. On September 22, 1989, they were united in marriage. Over the years, they made several trips to Alaska where they enjoyed fishing for salmon and halibut, and just enjoying the scenery and weather. They traveled to forty-nine states, Canada and Mexico, where they saw a lot of beautiful things. John was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Esco Taylor, Perry Lindsey and Marvin “Boots” Lindsey; four sisters, Bertha Voyles, Lucy Byrd, Nancy Carter, and Virgie Douglas; and one granddaughter, Lilly Redman. He leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife, Nancy; one son, Michael J. Lindsey; one daughter, Elaina Wright, and husband, Ed; two stepchildren, Michael Redman and wife, Bonnie, Teresa Redman and husband, Tim; thirteen grandchildren, Hansa, Jeremiah, Joshua, Linda, Alaina, Robert, Kainan, Stoney, Avery, Ian, Carly, Jada, and Jimmy; eight great-grandchildren, Kaden, Jo, Dominick, Hudson, Dylan, Cameron, Safera, and Dawson. During WWII, John was baptized in the Pacific Ocean while he was stationed in Guam. After returning home, he attended the Winona Christian Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandpa, brother, and uncle. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at Yarber Mortuary chapel, Winona, Missouri with Pastor Aaron Lindsey officiating.
