Her name is shown as Cribbs only on her tombstone, which also states she was 70 years old when she died in 1909. Polly was a descendant of the Cribb family of Marion County, South Carolina. The cemetery is on land that has been in her Cribb family since 1769. (See Cribb Cemetery Page for a history of the land the cemetery is on.) Polly's parents were Anthony Cribb (ca. 1800 - 1870) and his wife, Samantha "Mantha" Ford (c1815-1869). Polly had siblings: William Thomas Cribb (1833-1910), Dempsey Cribb (1837-1862), Emma J. Cribb (1840-1884), George Tally Cribb (1842-1906), Sarah Cribb (b. c1844) and Tina Cribb (b. 1850). Anthony's father (Polly's grandfather) was Thomas Cribb. There is some confusion about the name of Thomas Cribb's father. He was clearly related to the Thomas William Cribb from whom he purchased the cemetery land in 1803, and to the John Cribb who had a bounding land grant in 1768, which Thomas also later owned. Ernie Cribb felt that John Cribb was grandfather of Anthony. But he also stated that Thomas William Cribb was Anthony's father, and the deeds seem to indicate it was a different Thomas who was the husband of Elizabeth and father of Anthony. Sometime before 1824 Thomas Cribb's estate lands were partitioned and divided among his heirs, as shown in several deeds. In 1827 Thomas' widow, Elizabeth, gave her part of her husband's land - the tract that the cemetery and Elizabeth's house were on - to her son Anthony, stating it was "whereon she resided". Polly never wed. She had several children who were of mixed race. Those of her children who are buried here have no surviving or marked tombstones, but efforts are being made to locate their burial site and other data. Children of Polly Cribb as enumerated in 1870 and 1880 census records, all listed as mulatto in 1880 census, were: - Erasmus "Razz", son, age 14 in 1880, mar. 1/Ann Martin on 23 Feruary 1889 (source: Rev. Simeon Campbell's Diary) mar 2/Golda (unknown) - Pinkney "Pink", son, age 12 in 1880, mar. Sarah (unknown) - Jasper, son, (15 Apr 1872 - 25 Dec 1927) age 8 in 1880, mar. Zadie Campbell - Louiza/Louise "Lula" (1875-1940), daughter, mar. Edward McDuffie - Minnie "Mit", daughter, (1879-1900) age 1 in 1880 - Jenkins "Jenks" Cribb, Sr., (1884-1948), mar. Penny Lacewell Sampson Cribb, listed in Polly's 1870 household at age 10, was Polly's nephew, a son of Polly's brother, Dempsey Cribb. Polly, her son Erasmus, and Sampson were all enumerated as white in 1870. Information on Polly's family is from from The Diary of Rev. The cemetery had grown back up since the last survey, and has been recently timbered. There were marker ribbons to protect the cemetery, but the stones seem to have suffered damage anyway.
