Willis was born in Clark county, Ohio, on the 18th of July 1819, where he lived until he was 18 years of age, when he moved to North Manchester with his parents, when there was but one white family living in town, and the red men had their tents on the banks of Eel River. Willis was born in Clark county, Ohio, on the 18th of July 1819, where he lived until he was 18 years of age, when he moved to North Manchester with his parents, when there was but one white family living in town, and the red men had their tents on the banks of Eel River. He hauled the first dry goods that were brought to this place with an ox team from Richmond; and also the grain from Turkey Creek and Elkhart Prairie. In May, 1840, his mother died. In June of the same year he was married to Fannie Bloomer, of this place. In the fall of '43 he moved with his family back to Clark county, where he staid(sic) four years. He then came back to his farm six miles west of this place. In '55 he sold his farm and bought another one on Silver Creek, three miles south of Silver Lake; and in '58 he again sold his farm with the intention of going west, but he failed to collect his money, and again settled in Manchester. March, 1864, he enlisted in the service of his country in Company L 1st heavy artillery then stationed at Baton Rouge, where he contracted a disease that terminated with his life. On the tenth of December last, he was taken with lung fever, and after lingering for nearly five weeks, died a few minutes after twelve o'clock, Monday morning, January 12, 1873, in the 53rd year of his age. His funeral took place Monday afternoon, services by the Rev. Mr. Sellers. He leaves a wife and six children, two of which are married, to mourn his loss.
