Younie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Younie of this place, who died in France, arrived here Saturday noon. The casket bearing his remains was taken to the Knowles undertaking rooms, where they were carefully cared for up to hour of the funeral by an armed guard from the Younie Bros. Post American Legion. At two o'clock Sunday afternoon the funeral cortege moved from the undertaking rooms to the city park escorted by members of nearly all Legion Posts of the neighboring towns about 150 in number in full uniform. The flag draped casket was placed on the bier, an army gun carriage, drawn by four black horses and the funeral cortege moved up Second street to Dundas, then to the park in the following order; Drum corps, color bearer and armed guard the firing squad, and armed escort of honor in charge of Comdr. Lyle J. McLaughlin, the chaplain, the casket with pall bearers as escorts, the family in cars, eighty men in charge of Geo. Anderson and friends of the family. Rev. G.J. Poppenheimer had charge of the service at the park assisted by Rev. C.H. Fleming and Rev. Fr. Neppel. Appropriate music was furnished by the Odebolt male quartet; Messrs. O.W. Larson, D.W. Duncan, Paul Schultz and A.H. Reuber with Mrs. Duncan at the piano. The sermon was given by Rev. Poppenheimer, one that was listened to with close attention by a large audience. It was appropriate to the occasion expressing the great sacrifice made by the deceased. It was just a plain, every day talk, one that will long linger in the hearts of those concerned, the family and the boys who were called to defend the honor of our country and our flag. Following the service at the park the procession went to the cemetery where the final military service was held at the grave. Following the salute to the dead by the firing squad the bugle call and taps was sounded by Howard Jensen as the casket was slowly lowered in the grave. The floral offerings at the funeral were most beautiful and with two or three exceptions were made of home-made flowers. Arthur M. Younie was born near Odebolt, January 31, 1887 and died in a hospital in France, February 13, 1919 at the age of 32 years and 12 days. Early in the world war he gave heed to the call of his country and enlisted in Storm Lake from Buena Vista County on February 25, 1918. After enlisting he first went to Camp Dodge and soon afterwards to Camp Upton, N.Y. where he was assigned to duty with Battery F, 305th Field Artillery, 77th Division and sailed for Frances April 28, 1918. He was taken ill shortly after his arrival in France and died of bronchial pneumonia Feb. 13, 1919. He was well known in the community and was highly esteemed by all. Those of the immediate family remaining to mourn his death are the father and mother and two brothers, Bert and Richard. Relatives from out of town who were present for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Louis Younie and daughter, James Younie and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Younie and daughter and Elmer White from Hawarden, Mr. and Mrs. John Younie, Mr. and Mrs. James Bruce and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Younie of Odebolt, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hatfield of Pierson and Ernest White of Truesdale.
