BURKS, CHARLES R., Private, Deceased. Company I, 165th Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in action near Sergy, northeast of Chateau-Thierry, France, July 30, 1918. During the midday attack on Sergy, after all the runners had been exhausted and many men had been killed or wounded, Pvt. Burks volunteered to take a message to a neighboring unit through violent bombardment and machine-gun fire. He was killed by a machine-gun bullet while on his way with the message. "Russel Burks - The body of Russel Burks, another Company I boy of Mills county, who gave his life in service in France, arrived in Malvern last Friday evening. His parents who were Mills county residents at the time of his enlistment now reside in South Dakota but came to Malvern where they had the body reburied in the cemetery of what had been his hometown. Open air funeral services were held on the library lawn in that city Sunday afternoon, attended by a large number of friends and acquaintances from all parts of Mills county. Major Brewer delivered the funeral address in which he paid glowing tribute to the memory of this gallant young soldier who served as Brewer's private aide when he was serving as colonel in the A.E.F. Young Burks, who was one of, if not the youngest soldier in Company I was killed while in volunteer messenger duty during the battle of Sergy in France in 1918. Major Brewer praised his bravery and eulogized his character. He said that in all the time that he was closely associated with Russel Burks, he never heard an oath pass his lips, saw him use liquor or tobacco in any form. This young soldier of whom Mills county has every reason to be proud not only proved himself an able, daring soldier but an excellent man in all that the term applies. Music was furnished by the quartette from the Silver Grange of which young Burks was a member and the Legion ritualistic services were conferred over the body at the grave in Malvern cemetery."
