In the year 1849 in company with his parents he came to Iowa and settled at Davenport, where he resided for a number of years. In later years he moved to different parts of the state. The larger part of his life was spent in Iowa. On January 1, 1867, he was married to Sarah E. Hoover of Davenport, la. To this union was born twelve children—three sons and nine daughters. One daughter died in infancy. Those surviving are Dyton Jasper, Omaha; Mrs. Perry Benshoof, VanTassel, Wyo.; Mrs. Fred Benshoof, Wayne, Neb.; Mrs. Clarence Briggs, Emerson, la.; Mrs. Alfred Benedict, Maytofi, Alberta, Canada; Mrs. Ray Benedict, Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Erastus Wayne Bennett, Douglas, Wyo.; Mrs. Samuel Montgomery, Sioux City, la.; Mrs. James Hanson, Hurley, S. D.; Mrs. Albert Range, Friend, Neb.; Earl Wilbur Bennett, Red Oak, la. Mr. Bennett was converted when about 30 years of age and joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Dysart, la., and for fifty years was an active member of this denomination. Well can we say in the words of one of old: "He walked with God and was not for God took him as he was." He was a true Methodist of the old fashioned type. He believed in prayer, lived his religion and taught it to his children and grandchildren. None will miss him more than those little ones. He has been honored by his church in that he has filled nearly every one of its offices,from steward, Sunday School superintendent, teacher, class leader, to local preacher. To him came the distinguished honor of organizing four Methodist churches—one at Wayne, Neb., one near Ida Grove, la,, one at Hitchcock, S. D., and another in the eastern part of the state. A splendid record for this man of God. How well do the words of the great apostle Paul apply to him: "I have fought a good fight, I have kept the faith, I have finished my course; henceforth there is laid up for me acrown of righteousness." Besides his immediate family he is survived by one brother, Dresden D. Bennett, of Schaller, la., 46 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Methodist church, conducted by their pastor, Rev. H. K. Morga, after which the remains were laid in the Emerson cemetery.
