Description	:	Hugh Franklin Giffin, the son of George Milligan Giffen and Sara Ann Bellville, was born in Pultney Twp, Belmont Co on 11 Sep 1843. In 1846, when Hugh was about 3 years old the family moved to Oxford Twp, Guernsey Co and lived there until 1852 when they moved to Knox Co, OH. In 1853 George bought the 116 acre Wadsworth farm and donated a quarter acre site for the district school. Read More	Hugh Franklin Giffin, the son of George Milligan Giffen and Sara Ann Bellville, was born in Pultney Twp, Belmont Co on 11 Sep 1843. In 1846, when Hugh was about 3 years old the family moved to Oxford Twp, Guernsey Co and lived there until 1852 when they moved to Knox Co, OH. In 1853 George bought the 116 acre Wadsworth farm and donated a quarter acre site for the district school. Hugh and his siblings attended the school only briefly for in 1855 George sold the farm and moved the family to Illinois. They lived first in Sangamon County but at some time before 1860 the family moved to Christian County. On January 30, 1865 Hugh enlisted for one year in Company A of the 152nd Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The 152nd was initially sent to Nashville, Tennessee but in early April they moved to Tullahoma, TN and assigned guard duty for the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad. In July the Regiment was ordered to Memphi and around this time Hugh came down with typhoid fever. He spent the month of August is an Army hospital in Memphis In September the men of the 152nd were mustered out and Hugh received his discharge on September 11, 1865. His older brother, Marsilliot Belleville Giffin known as "Mars", went down to Memphis and brought Hugh home on the train. Hugh was fortunate in that his regiment, in its short existence, had 76 men die from disease. Hugh married Arminda Jane "Mandy" Mengel on July 25, 1867 in Pawnee, Sangamon Co, IL. In 1867 or 1868 Hugh and Amanda leave Illinois to homestead in Nebraska and in a special Nebraska census in 1869 they are found living in Oak Creek Precinct, Butler Co, Nebraska next to Hugh's parents. In 1883 Hugh moved his family to Kansas living first near Newton in Harvey Co and later in Severy, Greenwood Co, KS. Hugh died on 16 Aug 1903 at Geuda Springs, Sumner Co, KS. Arminda died on 09 Feb 1922 in Casper, Wyoming at the home of their son, Hugh, Jr. Hugh was my 1st cousin, three times removed. ~Skip Magyar @ MyFamily - Belmont Co.
