Jacob Alonzo Goodale was born on March 20, 1845 in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, the son of Joel Horatio Goodale, who was born c. September 4, 1814 in Stoddard, New Hampshire, and Mary (Coffman) Goodale, who was born c. 1821 in Pennsylvania or Virginia. Joel Horatio Goodale was the son of Joel Densmore Goodale, who was born on April 25, 1791 in Stoddard, Cheshire County, New Hampshire the son of Enos Goodale and Hannah ___________; and who was married to Elizabeth Kimball; and who died on August 22, 1885 in or near Toulon, Illinois in Stark County, Illinois at the age of 94 years, 3 months and 27 days and whose mortal remains were laid in the Toulon Cemetery in Toulon, Stark County, Illinois. See his Find A Grave Memorial# 113039444. Joel Horatio Goodale and Mary Coffman were married c. 1844 and are known to have had the following children; 1. 3. Joel H. Goodale, born c. 1849/50 in Indiana.
4. Lucretia Adaline Goodale, born c. 1850/51 in Indiana. Lucretia is believed to have died c. 1863.
5. Millard Fillmore Goodale, born c. 1855 in Stark County, Illinois. Millard F. Goodale was married to Allice E. Wilson on March 28, 1881 in Sand Creek Township of Union County, Iowa. Allice was born c. October 30, 1860 in Pleasant Township, Union County, Iowa, the first child of George W. Wilson and Elizabeth Wright. She helped care for her three brothers and three sisters after her mother died April 2, 1877. Millard and Alice made a home on land one mile from her father's farm. They were the parents of 4 children, Elsie Victoria 1881, Violet Elizabeth 1884, Earnest Orley 1887 and Coral Ashton 24 Feb, 1889. Alice died 02 March, 1889. Millard died in Oregon on October 24, 1935 and his mortal remains were returned to Iowa, where they were laid to rest in the Tingley Cemetery in Tingley, Ringgold County, Iowa. On August 13, 1862, Jacob Alonzo Goodale volunteered to serve in a company which was being raised in Marshall, Stark and Bureau Counties by a local well known farmer by the name of Orlando Fountain for service in the Union Army during the Civil War. At the time he enlisted, Jacob's place of residence is recorded as Valley Township of Stark County, Illinois.

The 86th Illinois began held their first reunion in Peoria. Illinois on August 27, 1887, the 25th Anniversary of their being mustered into service on August 27, 1862. At that first reunion they decided to try and locate every living member of the 86th Illinois. The surviving members of the 86th located and stayed in contact with Jacob Alonzo Goodale until about 1899. His last known mailing address as of 1899 was Kingsley, Iowa.
