James, or Jim, as he was called, was born 4 March, 1849, in Portsmouth, NH, to Phineas Hunt and his wife, Dolly Babb. James, or Jim, as he was called, was born 4 March, 1849, in Portsmouth, NH, to Phineas Hunt and his wife, Dolly Babb. His father died when he was about 4 or 5, and his mother moved back to Westbrook, Maine where her family was. Jim grew up there and joined the Union to fight in the Civil War when he was a teenager. He received an enlistment bonus of $400 and with that money bought his mother a small home in Westbrook. After the war he returned to Westbrook, but wanted to see if he could find work in a larger city. So he went to Boston and found work in a factory there, and he met Frank Bean, who introduced him to his sister, Georgianna Bean. They fell in love and eloped by train to Greenfield, Massachusetts on 26 October, 1872. They lived in Boston, where their first little girl, Martha Ellen, was born 4 January, 1874. Sadly she died just seven months later on 19 August, 1874. However, his wife was expecting again, and on 2 March, 1875, they welcomed Susan Gertrude, who was always called "Gertie", and then on 30 November, 1877, Florence Ada joined their family. A couple of years later his work played out, so he moved his family back to Westbrook, where he found employment in the S. D. Warren paper mill, and shortly thereafter their fourth daughter was born, Fannie Louise, on 12 May 1880. They lived in a home on Rocking Hill. Sadly, on 8 April, 1881, Jim was instantly killed while assisting to move a large calendar roller, made of chilled iron, weighing about two tons. He was in a group of men moving the roller from a platform to a tramway car, when he slipped and fell on the tramway, and the roller dropped from the platform and fell directly across his body. Just before this tragic accident, he had quit smoking and joined a church, and was planning to have his daughters baptized. His two oldest girls, 6 and 4, vividly remembered in later years standing beside his coffin in their little home and being baptized. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. of East Boston, and also a member of the Knights of Honor, from whom his wife received $2,000 insurance. So very sad. His wife and girls moved back to Boston, where tragically his youngest daughter, Fannie, died from measles in 1889, just 8 years old.
