GRUBBS September 11, 1870, with whom he lived happily over 53 years. He passed away at his home in Traer, January 14, 1924, age 79 years, 5 months and 13 days. To this union were born ten children, two having died in infancy -- JOHN and EMMA and three passed away in later years – MRS. ORPHA O. ONMAN, MRS. IVA M. PEARSON and CHARLIE J. WALTON. His wife, MRS. MARTHA E. WALTON and five children survive him, namely -- OSCAR H. WALTON, Fort Worth, Texas; ED C. WALTON, Rosemont, Nebr.; VERNA E. DECKER, Wauneta, Nebr.; CLARENCE WALTON, Oberlin and FRED E. WALTON of Traer, also 28 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. One brother, SAMUEL J. WALTON, Chelsea, Iowa and two sister, MRS. JANE WRIGHT, Mason City, Iowa and MRS. AMANDA SMITH, Omaha, Nebraska. He had been in poor health for a number of years and was bedfast most of the time for the last four years. He was totally blind for two years. He was a member of the M.E. Church at Traer and died true to his faith. He enlisted in the Civil War as a private, July 1861 in Co. C. 10th Illinois Vol. Inft. And served over three years. Sometime after he enlisted he was taken sick with the measles and was sent to Bird Point, to the hospital. In making the trip he was exposed to the cold and rain which resulted in serious eye trouble and about the 2nd of April 1862 he was again taken sick with pneumonia at New Madrid, Mo., and also again on the 13 of July the same year at Clear Creek, Miss. He had the third attack of pneumonia and was sent to the hospital at Ringston, Georgia, in August 1864, all of which caused serious lung trouble. His Captain said of him, "He was a No.1 soldier, always prompt in the discharge of his duties." He had been a member of the G.A.R. Since 1868. In the home where the true attributes of character are most apparent, he was a model of loyalty and sincerity. The tendrils of his love shall ever twine about the hearts and memory of his family, his life seemed inseparate from their lives. This record of his life is evidence of his honor in integrity. His fine intellect always guided him in the way of the right. He believed that a good character was to be desired beyond all else. It is hard to bear the separation, but our shortspan of life is but a mote in eternity. We owe a tribute of respect to these old pioneers, who contributed their part to the building of Christian civilization, which we, of this generation enjoy. They sowed the seed and we entered into the harvest. He lived in this community for many years, esteemed by all who knew him, living a life, honest before man and upright before God.
