Description	:	James Meli Tripp; son of Mrs. Eliza Tripp, was born in Manchester, Delaware county, Iowa, November 20, 1864. He came with his parents to Le Mars, Iowa, in the-fall of 1872 and the family resided there about four years. From there they moved on a claim three miles west of Akron, in Union county, S.D. later moving, to a farm on the Iowa side. Deceased made his home in and near Akron from that time and learned the blacksmith trade here. March 19, 1901, he enlisted in the U.S. Army under Lieut. Sweezey at Sioux City. He was assigned to service in the Philippine Islands as a private in Company B, Eleventh Regular Infantry, for a three-year term. He saw active service in the Philippine insurrection of 1901-2 and on October 6, 1903, at Manila, received an honorable discharge from Colonel Albert L. Myer, commanding the 11th Infantry. The record from his commanding officer, Lieut. W.A. Roberts, Jr., credits him with excellent character, honest and faithful service. He returned to the United States in July, 1904. A few months after arriving in this country he enlisted in the naval service and was employed at his trade, blacksmithing, on the battleships Alabama, Arkansas and several of the other big warships. He made the trip around the world with the great American fleet about two years ago, serving on the supply ship Culgoa. Completing a four-year term in the navy, he took a four-month furlough, with the privilege of re-enlisting under full pay. During this furlough he came here for a few weeks' visit with his mother and other relatives a little more than a year ago. He re-enlisted for another term at the end of his furlough and has been stationed most of the time on the Atlantic coast. A letter received by his mother from the medical director of the U.S. Naval Medical School Hospital, Washington, D.C, states the following details of his last illness and death: "Your son was transferred to this hospital from the U.S.S. Mayflower, at the navy, yard, Washington, January 22, with, cancer of the lip and throat, which first appeared in June, 1909, and has been steadily increasing in size. He desired operation and was operated on February 17, reacted well and was progressing favorably until three days later, when erysipelas appeared in the operative wound, spread rapidly and caused his death February 25. He received every attention in the Hospital by the medical officers and the trained nurses, who were in day and night attendance upon him during his illness. The remains were shipped here and the funeral held last Friday afternoon in the Akron M.E. Church. Interment in Riverside cemetery.
