The Emporia Gazette, 13 Mar 1934, Tue JOHN D. BOLTON DEAD John David Bolton, a resident of Lyon county for sixty years, died at 12:20 o'clock this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. N. E. Boyce, eight miles north of Emporia in the Rosean neighborhood. He had been sick for two months. Mr. Bolton was a retired farmer. Mr. Bolton was born August 17, 1846, in Fountain county, Indiana. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gideon Bolton. He was married December 4, 1870, in Indiana, to Mary Jane Hibbs. Mr. and Mrs. Bolton came to Kansas in a covered wagon in the fall of 1873, arriving in Lyon county on October 7. They settled on a farm near Plymouth. In 1880 they moved to the Twin Mound neighborhood. Later they moved to Emporia, and still later to Americus, where Mrs. Bolton died December 8, 1928, four days after their 58th wedding anniversary. After her death Mr. Bolton lived with a daughter, Mrs. B. J. Voorhees, in Americus, for three years, and for the past two years had made his home with Mrs. Boyce. Mr. Bolton was a veteran of the Civil war. He was too young to go in the first enlistment, but enlisted in the next to the last call for volunteers. He served for six months in the 135th Illinois infantry, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. His father also served in the war, having gone into the army at the beginning of the conflict. Mr. Bolton was a member of the Christian church, which he joined at Covington, Ind., in his youth. Three sons and three daughters survive Mr. Bolton. They are J. W. and J. F. Bolton, Emporia; I. E. Bolton, Chico, Calif.; Mrs. N. E. Boyce, Emporia; Mrs. B. J. Voorhees, Americus; and Mrs. A. L. McCormick, Corning, Calif.. Seventeen grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Sutton Funeral home, and will be conducted by Rev. Claude D. Large. Interment will be in Maplewood cemetery.
