Family Info Marion Vander Werff was born on February 18, 1912, to John and Myrtle Vander Werff. Marion was the 7th of 8 children. Marion's parents died when Marion was a young boy. His father's older brother Jacob (Reen) Vander Werff and his wife Jennie raised him to adulthood. He then lived with his older brother Albert prior to entering the service in May of 1941 and was employed at Tiny Prince's Fur Trade Shop. Marion trained at Camp Claiborne, Los Angeles, as part of Company "K" 164th Infantry. He was then sent to Guadalcanal where he was killed by a Japanese sniper on November 22, 1942. He was transferred from the Guadalcanal Cemetery in the Solomon Islands to the Punch Bowl National Cemetery in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Bastian and his aunt Jennie Vander Werff who helped raise him. He is survived by his daughter Dorothy; his uncle Jacob Vander Werff; three brothers: Albert (Henrietta) Vander Werff, Andrew (Bernice) Vander Werff, and John (Tena) Vander Werff; three sisters: Dirkje (Thomas) VerWolf, Jennie (Minor) Cobus, and Lena (Martin) Oosthoek; several nieces, nephews, cousins he grew up with and other family members.
