Here is the brief message received at nine o'clock Tuesday night bringing the word of sorrow: "Deeply regret to inform you that private Roy C. Kline, infantry, is officially recognized as killed in action Nov. 6. Harris." Roy was the son of Mrs. and Mrs. David Kline, of this city and the news was a terrible shock to the members of the family, who had been rejoicing in the knowledge that peace was coming. The news was telephoned to the parents and messages of sympathy have been going to them ever since. Roy is the twentieth Hamilton county boy to give up his life in the struggle against the autocrats of Europe. Further details of this latest war tragedy will be given as soon as definite information is available. Roy C. Kline was one of five men who made up the first draft contingent from this county. He left Aurora for Camp Funston April 2, 1918 and was among the first to be sent overseas. He was a member of Company B, 355th infantry, 89th division, and had seen much active service. It is particularly hard for his loved ones, who for the past month have felt a constantly increasing confidence that he would be returned to them safely, to think that he fell in one of the last engagements of the war. He was engaged in railroad service as a locomotive fireman for a number of years but was temporarily incapacitated by an accident several months before he entered the army. ____________________ "The Sun" [Aurora, Hamilton Co., NE], 12 Dec 1918: Roy Clifford Kline Roy Clifford Kline was born on a farm near Hampton, Nebr., July 25, 1891, and was killed in action in France November 6, 1918. When 6 years of age he came to Aurora, where he attended school, passing the eighth grade, after which he took a commercial course in the Aurora Business College. He commenced railroading as a messenger and worked his way up to locomotive fireman. He was called to pass the engineer examination at the time of his severe accident, when he fell from a locomotive while trying to fasten the side curtains of the cab in the severe sleet storm of December 12, 1916. He never recovered from the accident, which occurred between Verona and Clay Center. He was receiving medical treatment from that time until he was called in the first draft contingent, which left Aurora for Camp Funston April 2, 1918. He was unable to pass the physical examination and drilled less than half an hour in the tryout, so he was put to light work. He went overseas June 5th, was a member of Company B, 89th division, 355th infantry, up to the time he was killed on November 6th. He was of a bright and sunny disposition, beloved by all who knew him. He was always a great lover of his home. In his last letter of October 30th to his parents were thoughts and suggestions of their comforts for the winter. At the Y. M. C. A. at Camp Funston, on Mother's day, he wrote his mother he had taken his stand for Christ. One brother preceded him to the better world. He leaves to mourn their great loss, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. David Kline, his sisters, Lilah and Mrs. Ellis Lancaster, and a dear friend. "He has crossed the bar before us, Entered into Heaven's bliss, Waiting there to greet his loved ones, Though his presence we shall miss. Let our hearts not bow in sorrow, Shine his light now from afar, And we know soon comes the morrow, When we, too, shall cross the bar." ____________________ Three years after Roy's death, his remains finally were returned to Nebraska and laid to rest in Aurora. _____________________
