Winder, one of Anita's longtime and best known citizens, veteran of the civil war, passed away at his home in this city Wednesday afternoon, April 8th, after an illness extending over a period of several years, the last few months of which he was confined to his bed; death resulting from complications of long standing, from which he received only temporary relief. Thomas C. Winder was born at Freeport, Harrison County, Ohio, on January 8th, 1842, and passed away at his home in Anita, Cass County, Iowa, April 8th, 1925, at the age of eighty-three years and three months. He was the son of Samuel and Ruth Winder, and at the age of seven years, came with his parents to Iowa, locating in Louisa County, at which place the father died in 1870, and the mother a number of years later. In October 1861, T.C. Winder enlisted in the service of his country, being a member of the 11th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, where he servied for more than three years, receiving an honorable discharge in November, 1864. He took part in the battle of Shiloh, siege of Cornith, Vicksburg and Atlanta. At the close of the war, he returned to Louisa County and engaged in farming, and a few years later, was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Williamson, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Williamson, who settled in Louisa County, Iowa, during the year 1835. To this union were born six sons; Roy, now a resident of Kansas; Oliver C., of Nebraska; Harry C., of Canada; Chester T., of Anita; Arthur H., of Adair County, and Glen, who died in infancy. The wife of Mr. Winder passed away at the family home west of Anita many years ago. T.C. Winder came to Cass County, Iowa in March, 1872, and settled on a 160 acre tract of unimproved land, which he improved, and which was the home of the Winder family until the death of the wife and mother, when Mr. Winder disposed of his farm, purchased property and moved to Anita. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church in Anita; interment taking place in Evergreen Cemetery. Published in the Anita Record, April 6,1925.
