Description	:	Husband of Hannah Jane (Logan) Smalley (1834-1907). Father of nine children including: Mary, Joseph, Albert, Sarah, John, Robert Henry, Martha, Charles Edward and George Lewellan Smalley. William was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted as a Private in Co. E, 19th Iowa Infantry, on August 14, 1862 at age 24 and he received a disability discharge on Feburary 13, 1863 at Springfield, Missouri. Obituary from the Shenandoah World Post, April 9, 1907, page 1: Imogene, Iowa: "William J. Smalley was born in Highland, Ohio, September 18, 1837. He was married there October 19, 1854, to Hannah J. Logan, who died five weeks ago, he came to Van Buren County, Iowa 53 years ago and when the civil war broke out, he enlisted in C. E. 19th Iowa infantry and serves 2 years. He moved to Fremont county and has been for many years a resident of Imogene and a respected business man. For several years he has been ill with a disease that brought about his death. The funeral was held here today where his pastor Rev. H. Shumaker assisted by Rev. G. J. Nixon, the choir of the church singing appropriate hymns. His pallbearers were four sons, Henry, Edd, and Allie of Imogene and J. W. of Shenandoah, and two grandsons Roy Smalley of Shenandoah and Clarence Smalley of Imogene. His children were all present at the funeral except for Ab and John of Des Moines, who could not reach here on account of the train service. In addition to the sons who were pall bearers, his two daughters, Mrs. Bell Chapman of Red Oak, and Mrs. Martha Mills of Imogene. He is survived by 6 sons and two daughters, also one brother and one sister who live in Illinois.
