The sad news of the death of Lee Brannan, somewhere in France, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milt Brannan, south of town, was received Thursday of last week. All that is known at this time is noted in the telegram received from the Adjutant General, that he was killed in action October 22d. This comes as a great shock to the parents and friends, and more so after the signing of the Armistice, when naturally that tension of feeling, only known by the parents, was relaxed to some extent, that a great deal of the danger was past when hostilities ceased. He was called into the service June 26th, and sailed for France, August 20th. After arriving in France he was soon put on the firing line and saw active service, and made the supreme sacrifice. Lee was a young man that was a friend to every one and it is with sorrow that the news of his death was received. William Lee Brannan was born in Jefferson County, Iowa, March 29, 1893, and was killed in action in France, October 22, 1918, aged 25 years, 6 months and 23 days. When twelve years of age he moved with his parents to Van Buren county, which has since been his home. In September, 1916, he went to Kansas City, Mo., to enter the Sweeney Auto School. A few months later he accepted a position with the City Railway Company as a Conductor. He held this position until he was called to the colors June 26, 1918. He entered training at Camp Pike, remaining there a short time, when he was transferred to Camp Beauregard, Louisiana, and a few weeks later ordered to Camp Merritt, N.J., where preparations were made for overseas service, sailing for France, August 20th. He leaves to mourn his departure his parents, two sisters, Ruth and Helen, one brother, Joe, besides a host of relatives and friends. Source: Van Buren Co.
