Description	:	Wilson Shirley (Scherley) Private Co. H, 26th MO Infantry On December 2, 1852, Wilson Shirley married Clarandy Coffelt. Enlisted on September 18, 1862. At the time, Wilson was 5 foot 10 inches tall, with brown hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion. He traveled to St. Louis where he was officially mustered into service on October 27, 1861, being assigned to company H, joining other Osage county men. Read More	Wilson Shirley (Scherley) Private Co. H, 26th MO Infantry On December 2, 1852, Wilson Shirley married Clarandy Coffelt. Enlisted on September 18, 1862. At the time, Wilson was 5 foot 10 inches tall, with brown hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion. He traveled to St. Louis where he was officially mustered into service on October 27, 1861, being assigned to company H, joining other Osage county men. During the Vicksburg campaign in the spring of 1863, Wilson was wounded at the Battle of Champion's Hill, May 16.1863. The wound was a gunshot to the left hand traveling into the wrist resulting in a compound fracture. He was treated at Gayosa Hospital, Memphis, TN., but they were unable to remove the ball, which he carried in his wrist the rest of his life. Wilson was granted a 30 day furlough after his release from the hospital and was reported to be AWOL when he didn't return to the regiment after the allotted time. Special Order No. 163, 17th Army Corps, states: "Private Wilson Shirley, H Co, 26th Mo Regt. Infty Vols. mustered as absent without leave from August 25th 1863 to August 31st 1863 having been detained by reason of low water in the River, is hereby restored to duty and rank without loss of pay. By order of Brig Gen'l. John E. Smith". He returned to duty for the remainder of the war although he was assigned to Divisional Quartermaster duty for a period of time due to the disability caused by the wound. Wilson remained with the 26th Missouri until he was mustered out on August 13, 1865. He returned to his home in Osage county. d. October 3, 1889 near Mint Hill, Osage County, MO.
