Bruner Called Home Tuesday after an Extended Illness Shortly after nine o'clock Tuesday morning the death angel visited the Bruner home and removed from our midst Mrs. A.D. Bruner. Although she had been a sufferer from that dreaded disease, tuberculosis, for many years and for several days she had been lingering at the point of death, the announcement of her death cast a shadow of gloom over our little city. A couple of years was spent in California for the benefit of her health and on her return to Stratford it seemed that she had greatly improved, but the disease had gained a firm hold on her and was subdued only to appear again. Last winter her condition became such that she was compelled to take to her bed at times. In the spring she grew stronger and was able to enjoy the open air and sunshine. Several weeks ago she was taken seriously ill and since then it was known the end was nearing. During her suffering she was patient and cheerful and as the death angel fled with her soul to Heaven a peaceful smile adorned her countenance. In the passing away of Mrs. Bruner a laborer for Christ has gone to meet her reward. The greater part of her life was devoted to church work. In the Epworth League, the Sunday School and church choir she always filled a most responsible place. During her failing health she had to give up this work she loved so well and she was greatly missed by the members of these different organizations. She was a loving wife and her kind words and deeds and her winning ways won for her scores of friends. Another precious soul has been taken from our midst and the angels in Heaven are rejoicing. The bereaved husband and two step-daughters and other relatives have the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the residence and at 2 o'clock from the M.E. church. Stratford Courier October 3, 1907 Obituary Bruner Quincey A. Smith was born June 13, 1867 and died September 24, 1907, at her home in Stratford, Iowa. Her death came at the end of a long illness, months in duration, during which she manifested the utmost patience, resignment and trust in God. She was buried on Thursday afternoon at the Oakwood Cemetery, the sermon being preached by E.S. Benjamin, her pastor of the M.E. church, of which she was a member. The church was especially decorated and the floral offerings, consisting of an ivy pillow, a shield, a lyre, a wreath and many other flowers were given as a loving tribute to the departed friend. Mrs. Bruner was married for the first time to Jos. McKinney of Stratford on July 14, 1894. Mr. McKinney lived only a few months after this marriage. On July 6, 1897, she married A.D. Bruner, with whom she walked hand in hand until the day of her death. Her entrance into the home of Mr. Bruner was followed by years of real domestic felicity and happiness and the children of her husband became to her as her own. When little Roland left in 1904, for the better land, her heart was broken, and it seemed she could not be reconciled, and this is an illustration of the tenderness of her heart toward her own home. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Henry Smith and was one of eleven children - nine girls and two boys. The brothers and sisters are all living with the exception of Miss Julia, who died at the age of 42 years. Those living and their places of residence are: Josephine Smith, Mary Cornfield, Jennie Smith and George Smith of Lancaster, Ohio; Emma Fletcher and Ida Livengood of Milledgeville, Illinois; Evaline Knapp of Azusa, California; Charley Smith of New York, N.Y., and Mrs. Frances Lynde of Stratford, Iowa. Besides these she leaves a loving husband, two step-daughters, other relatives and a host of friends to mourn her demise. Her influence in the community was what that of a christian ought to be. She was converted and joined the church when thirteen years of age and remained a faithful and devout christian and church member up to the time of her death. She was deeply interested in missions, being a life member of the M.E. Mission Society. As illustrating the bend of her mind a remarkable fact is that before she was eighteen years of age, she had read the New Testament through seven times and the entire Bible three times. Few young people of that age make such a record. She continued to manifest the same interest in the Bible to the last and visitors at her bedside of sickness would often find her engaged in this beautiful and noble study. As a member of the Bible Study Class she was always most deeply interested. Her Sunday School class was the subject of earnest and solicitous love and attention and one of the keen struggles of her illness was to give up her class. Her faithful work in the choir and church can never be forgotten. In summing up this tribute to her memory let it be said, that hers was a model christian character at home, in the church and in the community. We shall miss our dear friend. The home she graced will miss her unspeakably. But, in the confidence of the truth of God's promises and in our confidence in her integrity of character and purpose and in her christian life we rest in hope of a glad reunion on the resurrection morn.
