This highly respected lady passed away at her home on South Main street, on Thursday morning, January 29th, having reached the age of 85 years, 2 months and 21 days. She had been in fairly good health for a person of her years, until the past few months her decline became rapid until the end came, closing a long life of usefulness. Early in life she joined the Methodist church, which she attended very faithfully as long as her health permitted. Her heart and hand were ever ready to assist the poor and needy and her good deeds will live in the thoughts of many. The funeral will be held from the late home on south Main street on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, with Rev. George Foster in charge of the service. The burial will be in Fairview cemetery beside her husband. The deceased was born in Monroe county, October 8th, 1824, the daughter of Lindsay and Nancy (Simms) Ballew, who came to Tipton county in 1854, settling near Nevada. The father was one of the early day merchants of the town and also built the first grist and saw mill, which was used mainly for grinding corn. Of her parents' family of 16 sons and daughters, she was the last to depart this life. At the age of sixteen years, on January 10, 1851, she was married to Aremel Lee, the marriage taking place in Madison county. With her parents, they came to Tipton county 25 years ago and they became residents of the town of Tipton. Only three years later the husband was called away by death, leaving her a widow since, March 18, 1898. To their union were born seven children, of whom but three are now living. Landy R. Lee, a merchant of this city; Mrs. Florence, wife of c. Stockdale, of near Peru; and William J. Lee, of Sacramento, Calif. Besides the sons and daughter, her descendants number 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
