Description	:	Rachel Parker Hill was born to Lonnie & Edna Parker in the Flat Rock community of Mt. Airy N.C. on June 30, 1932. Rachel and her husband, Rev. James Cecil Hill, were married on September 23, 1953. They were blessed with two sons: James Cecil Hill, Jr. (1958-1996) and Stephen Parker Hill (1963-Present). She is survived by one loving sister, Pauline Parker Badgett and daughter-in-law, Verna Tolbert Hill. Rachel attended Mt. Airy Senior High and graduated with Superlative Honors for her academic efforts. She was acknowledged by her classmates as a leader when elected to the Student Body, representing them as Vice President. “Most Likely to Succeed” was attached to her as she made her way to Nursing School at North Carolina Baptist Hospital to further her education. “Most Dependable” would accurately describe the feelings of her beloved classmates in Winston-Salem. She received her RN certification from “Baptist” and then spent a lifetime in service to others. Working closely with the Duke Endowment Foundation, Rachel served Franklin, Wake, Lee, Vance and Johnston counties until she retired from Granville Medical Center in Oxford N.C. as Director of Education. She served on the Board of Directors of Wake Forest Baptist Hospital's Blue Ridge CareNet Program and was President of Health Education Libraries at UNC-CH, North Carolina State University, Wake Medical and the Federal Prison in Raleigh. She was elected as a Board Member of Surry County Red Cross, and Yokefellow Organizations. District 3 Nurses Association elected her Treasurer as well. While serving as President of the Volunteer Auxillary, she accumulated over 5000 hours of service to Northern Hospital of Surry County and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year. One of her most valued accomplishments came when she agreed to be the very first Hospice nurse in Surry County. Her outside interests included a term as PTA President and School Nurse for Jones Elementary. She was fortunate enough to be elected President of Mountain View and Modern Garden Clubs of Mt. Airy. Rachel was a Charter Member of the Ladies Golf Association at Mt. Airy Country Club & Pilot Knob Park. She also was involved with Surry County Altrusa and Jr. Women's Club. Rachel was a contributor to her sister Pauline's publication in the book, History of Surry County Vol. 2. The book chronicles many of the families who were among the first to settle the Yadkin Valley region. Their efforts focused on the Simmons and Parker families, which eventually lead to their acceptance into the prestigious organization, Daughters of the American Revolution. Although her professional and outside involvements in the local community were extremely rewarding, nothing was as fulfilling as her service to her publicly professed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She served tirelessly in support of her husband's ministry and became a full time pastor's wife beginning in 1974. Her roles as W.M.U. President, choir member, Sunday school teacher, member of the Diaconate committee and vacation Bible school volunteer were among her favorite activities in pursuit of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She was a proud member of the Rebekah Sunday School class from 1964 until she was no longer able to attend her home church at First Baptist in Mt. Airy. Her greatest career achievement was to give aid & comfort to the children involved in the infamous Flat Rock School fire on February 22, 1957. Among those critically burned were five teachers and 25 students. The book “Tragedy to Triumph” written by Randle E. Brim documents the events of which many gave their best efforts to help with the suffering of those involved in the fire. As an eventual mother of two, she felt she was doing what any mother would do to give aid to others, especially young children. She was just finishing her shift at Baptist Hospital that day and Cecil was waiting in the car to leave with her for the day. At that very moment the first children starting arriving. Instead of leaving, while Cecil held the door for the Emergency Responders, she went back in to help others in need of medical assistance. For that faithful decision and her call to duty, along with a lifetime of service to others, she was received into the waiting arms of her Lord & Savior Jesus Christ on December 17, 2014
