The family had converted in Wales and, through faith and determination, traveled across the Atlantic in order to push a handcart across the great West to Salt Lake City. Rachel's mother was born when they reached Salt Lake City. The family became disillusioned with their decision and moved back to what was then the edge of the West -- the Council Bluffs area of Iowa. They joined a people who also left the Mormon church and organized themselves into The Reorganized Latter Day Saint church. This type of religious formation based on sacrifice and vision must have really affected Rachel, as she lived out a similar story in her own efforts to follow God. The census reports of the time have her with her husband in Council Bluffs in 1925, yet in 1930 and afterward they are found in Salt Lake City, Utah. At some point, either Rachel and Joseph returned to Council Bluffs or simply their remains were returned here, as seen by their burial in the same cemetery as Rachel's parents and maternal grandparents.
