BLANCHARD IS CALLED Another Good Mother Suddenly Stricken and called to Final Home MOTHER OF A LARGE FAMILY Was Among the Early Pioneers and Endured Hardships of Early Life Mrs. John Blanchard died Sunday afternoon from a stroke of paralysis. While preparing dinner Saturday she fell into unconsciousness, though medical aid was at once summoned. She was laid to rest Tuesday, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. A. J. Matthews at the M. E. Church, a large number of long time friends and neighbors, together with many relatives, being in attendance. Mrs. Blanchard was an ambitious woman for her family. She was exceptionally industrious and exerted a wholesome influence over her children, all having grown up to splendid manhood and womanhood. Even in her declining years, long after most mothers plan to take life easy, she insisted on keeping house and looking after her individual wants. She was a good wife and mother and what more can be said in praise of any wife and mother when she goes to final rest? She and her husband, the latter deceased, were pioneer settlers of the locality and thus with the children have become an integral part of the community. We have secured the following brief history of her life: Mrs. Rachel Grubbs Blanchard was born in Indiana, September 15, 1841, and died March 25, 1917, aged 75 years, 6 months and 10 days. When 15 years of age she came to Tama County, Iowa with her parents. On June 22, 1857, she was united in marriage to John H. Blanchard. It was the year 1879 when they removed to this county where she has since resided. To this union were born fourteen children. The husband and four of the children have preceded her to the beyond. The remaining children were present at these rites. They are: Mrs. Mary Pasley, Lewis Blanchard, William Blanchard, Otha Blanchard, Mrs. Alva Churchill, Miss Loretta Blanchard of Coon Rapids; Mrs. Elizabeth Driggs and Alba Blanchard of Letcher, South Dakota; Uri Blanchard of Dodge Center, Minnesota and twenty great grandchildren. Two brothers, Allen Grubbs of Nebraska and Otha Grubbs of California, together with two sisters, Mrs. Martha Walton of Kansas and Mrs. Gerusha Compton of Nebraska, survive her. Services were held at the M. E. church Tuesday at 2 P.M. and interment was made in the Coon Rapids Cemetery. Out of town relatives who attended the funeral of Mrs. John Blanchard were Mr. and Mrs. Newton Grubbs and Mrs. Maggie Heater of South Dakota, Oston Walton of Toledo, Iowa, Wm. Compton and family of Templeton, Ab. Blanchard and Mrs. G. H. Driggs of South Dakota, Uri Blanchard of Dodge Center, Minn. and Frank Blanchard of Des Moines. Contributor: AVT - [email protected]
