Description	:	Rachel Painter, tenth of the twelve children of John Painter and his second wife Rachel (née Redd), was born on 28 November 1826 in Perry Township, Richland County, Ohio, and grew up there on the Painter family farm. Rachel Painter and George Hines were married on 16 September 1847 in Richland County. The marriage ceremony was performed by Reuben Evarts, Justice of the Peace for the county's Jefferson Township, where the Hines family farmed, and George Hines was born. Read More	Rachel Painter, tenth of the twelve children of John Painter and his second wife Rachel (née Redd), was born on 28 November 1826 in Perry Township, Richland County, Ohio, and grew up there on the Painter family farm. Rachel Painter and George Hines were married on 16 September 1847 in Richland County. The marriage ceremony was performed by Reuben Evarts, Justice of the Peace for the county's Jefferson Township, where the Hines family farmed, and George Hines was born. The couple, with their infant daughter Filinda, were enumerated in 1850 in Berlin Township, Knox County, Ohio, immediately south of Jefferson Township. George Hines was then a blacksmith. In 1860, the couple, with three more children—Wilson, Crawford, and Elzada—were farming in Perry Township. Daughter Elmina was born there in 1861. By 1864, Rachel and George Hines moved their family to Jefferson Township, Noble County, Indiana, where the couple's last child Albert was born in July 1864. George's brother Thomas H. Hines also settled in the same township. Rachel's sister Mary Huntsman and family moved in 1864 to Noble County, and settled about 2 miles away in the county's Green Township.* George Hines passed away in 1896. In 1900, Rachel Hines was living next to her son Wilson Hines in Jefferson Township, Noble County. In 1910, she was living with her son Albert Hines in the same township. The Painter family farm in the southeast corner of Perry Township bordered Jefferson Township to the east, and Knox County's Middlebury Township to the south. John Painter entered his land in 1814. John and Rachel Painter were enumerated in Perry Township from 1820 to 1860. George Hines' parents, Philip and Lydia, settled in Jefferson Twp. prior to 1820. In the 1840 U.S. Census, the Philip Hines household was four calls away from the Samuel Devoe household. Devoe's wife, the former Miriam Redd, was Rachel Painter's maternal aunt. Six children of Rachel and George Hines are known and lived to maturity. The 1900 U.S. Census indicates that she had seven children of whom six were living. Obits. of sons Wilson and Crawford both attest to seven children. Obit. of daughter Elzada says six. * The date of Rachel and George Hines' arrival in Noble County, Indiana, is not known. They might not have gone there directly from Richland County, Ohio. George's brother Thomas H. Hines, for example, went first to LaGrange County, Indiana, for a year; returned to Ohio; then went to Noble County. Rachel's sister Mary's brother-in-law, Jacob Huntsman, went first to Illinois (1840), then Iowa (1850), Illinois (1860), Noble County (1870), and later returned to Iowa (1880). Many other Richland County families relocated to Noble County. Rachel's brother Hamilton's father-in-law, John Grubb, settled in Jefferson Township, Noble County, in the late 1830s. An 1874 Noble Co. atlas shows that brothers Geo. Hines and Thos. H. Hines each had a half (about 80 acres) of the northwest quarter of Section 33, Jefferson Township. A little more than 2 miles away, the Jeremiah Huntsman estate owned about 160 acres in Section 7, Green Township. Jeremiah's brother Jacob Huntsman was in Section 9, Green Township.
