Darkness has hovered over the home of Mr. and Mrs. George DeJean this week, their son Ralph having met death by drowning in what is known as the Gilchrist bayou, about six miles south of town, Thursday forenoon. Darkness has hovered over the home of Mr. and Mrs. George DeJean this week, their son Ralph having met death by drowning in what is known as the Gilchrist bayou, about six miles south of town, Thursday forenoon. It appears that Ralph, who had been working for William Malone, had gone to the bayou in company with others, his employer included. After a time spent there they started for home. On the way several other boys were met and Ralph asked permission to return with them to the bayou. Mr. Malone, after much persuasion, gave him permission to return. Exact details are hard to obtain, but it seems that Ralph lost his hat in the water and swam out to get it. He had succeeded in getting the hat and was on his way back to land, when was seized with what is thought to be cramps. Those in his company seemed to at once realize his danger and attempted to assist him. But one of the party could swim. Perry Moore, who attempted to reach him. The drowning boy grabbed him in such a a way that Moore was powerless to render assistance or protect his own life, and after two attempts, was compelled to abandon Ralph, who sank in fifteen feet of water. The hour of the funeral is not known at this time, but it is thought it will be held Sunday. Published in The Dunlap, Iowa (Dunlap, Iowa) on Friday, June 19, 1908.
