Anderson. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Ralph Anderson was the son of James T. and Mary Anderson. His parents came to Holyoke from Aurora, Nebraska in 1888. They bought two quarters of land and stayed only two years before moving near Eugene, Oregon. Ralph was born there in 1892. When he was four years old, they moved back to Nebraska, where he received his first eight years of schooling. In 1908 they moved back to Holyoke. They built on the land they owned southeast of Holyoke. Ralph graduated from Phillips County High School in 1912. He took over the farming after his father passed away. Hazel was born in Allerton, Iowa to Harve and Belle Ferrel. Her parents died when she was a young girl and she lived with her grandparents, James and Martha Stiles. Hazel attended schools in Allerton and Clio, Iowa. When she was 17, she and her grandparents came to Holyoke in December 1913. They came because their son, Charley Stiles, lived in this area. Not long after they came, Hazel and a young man by the name of Ralph Anderson caught each other's eye. Hazel was 18 when Ralph and she were married November 11, 1914 in the Presbyterian parsonage in Holyoke. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm 3 miles south and one mile east of Holyoke. In 1915 they bought a Model T Ford. Hazel learned to drive it by driving all over a quarter of land just west of their place where there were no fences. They farmed for 15 years. Ralph served as County Commissioner of District 11 from January 1921 to January 1925. After being hailed out for several years, they were forced to find another means of making a living. They could recall the terrific hail storms, the winds, and the prairie fires. During one prairie fire, Ralph had to plow around the house to keep it from burning. They moved to Holyoke in 1929 and Ralph served as Postmaster from 1929-1934. In May 1934 Ralph opened the Gamble Store. He also sold State Farm Insurance and United Funds. Hazel worked in the post office from 1929-1947 and in the Gamble Store from 1948-1958. Hazel took care of the north side of the store. Her stock included dry goods, toys, and clothing (mostly children's). She also carried hats in her section. The hats were sent to her by consignment from New York. In March 1945 they received word that their son, Ralph Leland, Jr. was killed in the Philippines during World War II. He was a pilot for a B-24 bomber which flew over the Philippines. On January 1, 1958 they sold their interest in the Gamble Store to their son, Deane. (Deane continued to run the business as Anderson Hardware.) Following retirement they bought an Airstream trailer and went to Canada, California, Florida, and Texas. They took a liking to Florida and spent future winters there. They had to get back in the spring so Ralph could get his garden started. He loved his garden, his ham radio, and his many ham radio friends. He was a strong supporter of community activities. He enjoyed political events and school activities. They were members of the First Christian Church since 1919. Ralph was Masonic Lodge Master in 1922. Hazel was Eastern Star Matron in 1927. She also belonged to Navy Mothers Club, Gold Star Mothers Club, and Christian Women's Fellowship. Ralph and Hazel had six children: Marjorie Black, Ralph Leland, Jr., Mary Belle Williams, Bona Beck, Deane, and Dale. After Ralph passed away December 15, 1984, Hazel lived with their son Dale. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
