His parents brought him home to the family ranch in the Littleburg/Hidden Timber area of Todd County, South Dakota. Read More	Ralph James Longcor was born July 30, 1943 to Ralph George “Mike” and Zeta (Grooms) Longcor in Valentine, Nebraska. His parents brought him home to the family ranch in the Littleburg/Hidden Timber area of Todd County, South Dakota. Ralph grew up on the family ranch riding horses, doing chores and getting into his share of mischief. As a youth, he was fond of poultry and even had a pet duck at one time. For elementary school, Ralph attended Longcor School, a one-room country school located down the lane from his childhood home. After eighth grade he attended high school in Valentine, boarding with a family in town during the school week and returning to the family ranch on the weekends. Ralph grew up riding horseback with his brother John and the neighbor kids, shooting rabbits for fun was another enjoyment. In 1973 Ralph married Jayne Sherwood, from Wood, South Dakota. After a road trip to the southwest and Las Vegas, they returned home to continue the ranching venture he had started. Ralph and Jayne were blessed with a son James and daughters Lisa and Kacee and two grandsons, Taylor and Kendran. His wife and children were his pride and joy. Ralph ranched all his life and enjoyed everything associated with raising and feeding cattle; especially branding. Spending time outside brought Ralph great pleasure. When time permitted, Ralph and Jayne enjoyed traveling to casinos around the region. He was an excellent card player, but slots were his favorite. He spent numerous evenings playing pitch, pinochle, hearts or rummy with family and friends. Ralph was known for his quick wit, easy smile, contagious laugh, and the twinkle in his eye. He rarely encountered a stranger. This was evidenced by the twenty minute phone conversations Ralph would sometimes have with “wrong numbers”. He never turned down an opportunity to learn something often utilizing his excellent inquiry skills during conversation. On July 22, 2014, Ralph entered eternal rest in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Zeta. He is survived by his wife Jayne, their children James, Lisa and Kacee, and grandsons Taylor and Kendran. Also surviving are siblings John Longcor (Lynne) of Mission, South Dakota, and sister Loleta Kvien (David) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and many nieces and nephews.
