Description	:	Ray Franklin Dearborn, the son of Oscar and Minnie (Parmely) Dearborn, was born on his parents ranch in north Buffalo County, South Dakota. The ranch was in section 5 of what was then called Eden Township, near where the Duncan Church is now. About 1907 the family moved a short distance north and his parents built a new farm place in the north east quarter of section 20 in Pleasant Valley Township of Hand County. Read More	Ray Franklin Dearborn, the son of Oscar and Minnie (Parmely) Dearborn, was born on his parents ranch in north Buffalo County, South Dakota. The ranch was in section 5 of what was then called Eden Township, near where the Duncan Church is now. About 1907 the family moved a short distance north and his parents built a new farm place in the north east quarter of section 20 in Pleasant Valley Township of Hand County. In 1910 Oscar and Minnie, with Ray and his older sister Vera, took an extended trip by train to the Pacific Northwest to visit relatives and to scout out the possibility of relocating. The 1910 census recorded them living in Peshastin, Washington, near the family of Minnie's sister Rhoda (Parmely) Gilbert. On the return trip that same year Ray and Vera returned to Miller with other relatives while Oscar and Minnie went into Canada and checked on the possibility of acquiring land near Swift Current, Saskatchewan. They decided against this and returned to South Dakota a short time later. In about 1913 Oscar and Minnie bought the Templeton country store in Jerauld County which they ran for a few years before locating again in Pleasant Valley township of Hand County. Ray married Grace Elsie Kinyon, the daughter of Allen and Sarah (Slack) Kinyon, August 5, 1920 at the home of Grace's sister Ella (Kinyon) Haywood in Harrisburg, South Dakota. They lived with Ray's parents until moving to their own place on the Danforth road (now 216th street) in 1933 about a mile and a half east of state highway 45 (map coordinates N 44.25411 W 98.95760). Ray and Grace were the parents of four children, Shirley, Dwight, Beverly and Delwyn. About 1951 they sold the farm place to Ward Goodall and moved into Miller where they lived first in a house on East 3rd Street until building a new home on West 4th Street two blocks west of the Courthouse. Ray continued to farm after they moved into town and built up a new place in section 15 of Pleasant Valley Township to serve as his farming headquarters on the land he called "Morgan's" after a friend who was the previous owner (map coordinates N 44.24857 W 98.98582). He continued to farm into the 1960s when he fully retired. He and Grace moved to the Miller Plaza apartments in 1981. Ray died in Miller, May 12, 1983. Both he and Grace are buried in the G.A.R. cemetery in Miller.
