Read More	Abstracts of obituary from The Monroe Journal at the Union County Public Library Day/Date of newspaper: Tuesday, July 7, 1936 p.1 Spelling/punctuation left ‘as is’ Headline: Ray Funderburk Dies After Long Battle For Life Sub-headline: Distinguished Educator, Native of Union County, Passes at Duke Hospital Monday Mr. Ray Funderburk, native of Union County, and one of the most distinguished men in educational work in North Carolina, died in Duke hospital at ten-thirty Monday morning. The body was brought back to his native soil for its last resting place and the funeral was held this afternoon from the First Baptist church, and the interment was in the Monroe cemetery, four miles from the spot in Buford township where he was born and reared. His career was brilliant and useful and his whole life was given to educational work. He was born April 19, fifty-one years ago. His boyhood was spent on the farm. He grew up with 4 brothers and several sisters. The boys were all fine, robust young men and all are now dead except one, the youngest. All died at comparatively youthful ages. Each made a success in his chosen field. The eldest, Lex Funderburk, was a farmer and was the first to die in the vigor of manhood. Vann was a merchant and mayor of Monroe several times. Kemp was a successful dentist. Five of the sisters are living. After graduating at Wake Forest college Mr. Funderburk entered the teaching profession. He taught at Clayton, Grifton, Matthews, The Mills orphanage and other places in the State. He went to France with the American Educational corps where he did distinguished service. After the war he became principal of the Marshville school, from which he came to the service of his native county as superintendent of schools in 1919. Here he served notably for two terms and his work brought him to the notice of the educational leaders, and from then on his services were in demand…He accepted the superintendency of Cumberland county and moved to Fayetteville. From there he was picked to go to Wilmington to take charge of the combined city and county schools, one of the first consolidations of this kind in the State…he held [this] position until his death. Last Spring Mr. Funderburk was unanimously elected president of the North Carolina Education association…though at the time he was sick…Officials of the association…have expressed deep regret at his death and Supt. H. P. Harding of Charlotte was designated to attend the funeral as the…representative of the…association. Mr. Funderburk had served previously as vice president… In 1920, Mr. Funderburk married Miss Ruth Folger of Dobson…Mrs. Funderburk survives with their two children, Ray, 15, and Ruth, 9…all the brothers are dead except one, Dr. N. A. Funderburk, of Trion, Ga…sisters are: Mrs. Henry W. Gribble…Mrs. J. B. Bass…Mrs. W. H. B. Whitley…Mrs. B. D. Laney…and Mrs. Lee Medlin… Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Funderburk, have been dead some years…
