At the railroad crossing right in town, North, one of the Great Northern's fast passenger trains, struck a farm wagon and team, instantly killing Lloyd Erickson who was driving and sadly injuring Roy Boyer that he died at a Williston hospital at 1 o'clock the next morning. The victims were both boys. Lloyd Erickson was 16 and his companion 12. They had just hitched the fine spirited team, which belonged to Erickson's father to a new lumber wagon and were starting to the Erickson farm where they were to thrush. There are different theories as to the cause of the accident. The team was prancing and going at a good clip and some think it was partly out of the driver's control; others discard this theory. The train was an hour and a half late and was running at high speed. A threshing rig was on the road ahead and making noise enough to drown the sound of the train. The situation surrounding the crossing is bad and a train cannot be seen much before the track is reached. It seems probable that the boys were off their guard until the moment to make the right decision was past. The pilot of the engine struck the wagon fairly in the middle leaving a pair of wheels at either side of the track and reducing the box and gear to splinters. Erickison's neck was broken and t is evident he was instantly killed while the Boyer's body was bruised about the head and probably received internal injuries. His companion was thrown 83 feet and so badly injured that he never regained consciousness. The horses were thrown about 150 feet and killed. Lloyd Erickson and Ray Boyer were two of the best boys to be found anywhere, each the oldest child of their family, not only a great help and source of pride to their parents but leaders with a splendid influence in the young people's social and religious circles. Their loss is keenly felt and the community morns with the stricken families. Lloyd Gilmore Erickson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Erickson, a prominent farmer living close to Spring Brook was born at Leadyard, Kasouth county, Iowa, April 14, 1896, died September 12, 1912. Funeral services were conducted at Spring Brook, Sunday afternoon, September 15, by Rev. F. S. Hollett of Williston assisted by Rev. A. Alyea, the remains were interred in the Spring Brook cemetery. Besides the parents, a sister and three brothers are left. Ray Newton Boyer, the oldest son of a widowed mother who resides in Spring Brook, was born at Arthur, Iowa, May 24, 1900, died September 13, 1912. Funeral services were conducted at Williston, Saturday, September 14 at 11 a.m., by Rev. F. S. Hollett assisted by Rev. A. Alyea, and Dr. Waller.
