Description	:	Ray William Phelps, 93, of Waverly, Iowa, died early Friday morning, July 13, 2012, at the Waverly Health Center, Waverly, Iowa of natural causes. Ray was born on February 5, 1919, in rural Plainfield, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Amanda (Winkelman) Phelps. Ray was baptized at the Methodist Church in Plainfield and later confirmed as an adult at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. Ray was born on February 5, 1919, in rural Plainfield, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Amanda (Winkelman) Phelps. Ray was baptized at the Methodist Church in Plainfield and later confirmed as an adult at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. He attended rural country school near his home and following his formal education, he helped his parents on the family farm which was located 1 ½ miles west of Plainfield. On December 23, 1939, he was united in marriage to Isabel "Izzy" Marie Schwab at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. The couple made their home next to Isabel's parent's farm, where Ray continued to farm and their oldest two girls were born, Myrna and Joan. In 1964, they purchased the Kahle farm south of Plainfield where their youngest daughter, SuzAnn was born. Ray and Izzy worked together on the farm and in the early 1970's Ray began his custom trucking and farming business. Over the next years, Izzy would run the farm during the day and when Ray finished his trucking at night he then would take over. In 1983, the couple moved off the farm and into Waverly, where Ray began working for Happel Construction Company. Ray retired in 1994, and he and Isabel continued to make their home in Waverly. Izzy died on December 28, 2008. Ray has been a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church his entire married life. He really enjoyed fishing and woodworking. Ray and Izzy loved to travel and have visited every state in the Continental United States as well as Hawaii and Alaska. They were lifelong dancers, working 12 hour days together and dancing in the evenings. Ray's passion was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Ray is survived by his three daughters and their husbands, Myrna Hamilton of Rochester, Minnesota, Joan (Bob) Hill and Suzie (Bruce) Kramer all of Waverly, seven grandchildren; Scott (Theresa) Hamilton, Lori Hamilton, Ashley Hill, Alison (Chris) Serck, Jason (Amanda) Kramer, Mark (Misty) Kramer, Brian Kramer; six great grandchildren; Anne and Alex Hamilton, Quinton Hill, Myla Serck, Kylee Kramer and Clayton Kramer. Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Izzy; and two brothers, Glenn and Lawrence. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 16, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly, with Pastor Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Public visitation will be held on Sunday, July 15th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home in Waverly and also for an hour prior to services on Monday at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the donor's choice.
