Description	:	Raymond David Ulmer, 74, died February 14, 1998, at the Apostolic Christian Home, Sabetha. He was born December 28, 1923, the son of Ernest Ulmer and Rose Strahm Ulmer, at Bern. He was one of eight children. Growing up Ray was a faithful helper to his father and neighbors, running errands and doing simple jobs. Read More	Raymond David Ulmer, 74, died February 14, 1998, at the Apostolic Christian Home, Sabetha. He was born December 28, 1923, the son of Ernest Ulmer and Rose Strahm Ulmer, at Bern. He was one of eight children. Growing up Ray was a faithful helper to his father and neighbors, running errands and doing simple jobs. He delighted in being needed and often lent a helping hand in caring for nieces and nephews. Children and babies were his pride and specialty. Upon his father's death, Ray became a devoted companion to his mother, helping around the house and providing tender care. For several years Ray worked at the Bern Lumberyard doing a number of tasks. He was a valued worker. In 1975, he began attending the Nemaha County Training Centers in Seneca and Sabetha. He participated in Special Olympics, where he won a number of trophies, medals and ribbons. Ray was invited to Kansas City, where a team of specialist, amazed at his longevity, conducted a number of tests and family interviews. Their conclusions let them to believe Ray to be the oldest living Downs Syndrome in the state of Kansas. Ray remained living at home with his sister, Anna, until failing health required him to move to the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha. Survivors include three sisters, Anna Ulmer; Bern; Lydia Marie Heiniger; Bern; Emily Stone, Exeter, CA; and one brother, Glenn Ulmer, Elmwood, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Lucille Moorehead and brothers, Amos Ulmer and Ernest Ulmer, Jr. Funeral services were held February 17, 1998, at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha.
