Description	:	Raymond E. Gustafson, 87, quietly passed away April 13, 2008, at the Country Life Assisted Living home in Montana City. Ray was born March 6, 1921, in Helena. He attended a one-room school house in the McClellan Creek area and was one of the Helena High School students that attended class in boxcars because of the devastating earthquake that destroyed the high school building in 1936. Read More	Raymond E. Gustafson, 87, quietly passed away April 13, 2008, at the Country Life Assisted Living home in Montana City. Ray was born March 6, 1921, in Helena. He attended a one-room school house in the McClellan Creek area and was one of the Helena High School students that attended class in boxcars because of the devastating earthquake that destroyed the high school building in 1936. Ray was a popular guitarist in the Helena area. Ray's love of the guitar started while he was in high school. In his younger days, he played on the edge of Helena's red-light district. He told stories of playing music inside a fenced cage of sorts and drinking the beer that the nightclub allowed him to have. In his career, Ray saw many things: audience members throwing silver dollars at musicians, beer poured into guitars and a motorcycle ridden down a set of stairs, stopping inches from another musician's head. Although he played in several area bands, he is most noted for the music made with his wife of 54 years, Kay. Officially, they were Ray and Kay and their Singing Strings, but everyone simply knew them as Ray and Kay. Ray's father established the Gustafson ranch in 1917. Ray had moved to Seattle to work for Boeing Aircraft during World War II, but he returned to formally take over the operation of the ranch in 1954. It was a small Hereford operation that was also home to many elk and deer. Ray was an avid storyteller; he loved to entertain friends and family members with tales of hunting, fishing and other adventures that accompanied life on the ranch and elsewhere. Survivors include Tom and Patti Russ of the family ranch on McClellan Creek in Clancy, and a large extended family, including sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews and their children. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kay; his parents, Carl and Nannie Gustafson; his brother, Herbert Gustafson; and sisters, Marian Moss and Marguerite Johnson. Interment will follow at Forestvale Cemetery.
