J. Collins (#47551768) for the following information. Ray E. Sweeney was born January 24, 1924 to Mike and Rose (Quillin) Sweeney, raised in Lycurgus and attended Hanson School. On September 21, 1943 Ray was united in marriage to Monica Burke. Their marriage was blessed with 14 children and 31 grandchildren. Ray and Monica lived in the Lycurgus area for 33 years prior to moving to Waukon. In addition to farming, Ray did custom work for area farmers. He managed the Service Gas Company in Waukon from 1956-1962, at which time he started the Village Farm and Home. Ray attended auctioneer college in 1966 and started Sweeney Auction Service shortly thereafter In 1992 he was recognized as Iowa's Auctioneer of the Year. Ray continued to be active in both business, as well as assisting in the development of Farm and Home Stores in Lansing and Monona, Iowa, and Mabel, Minnesota. Ray's great respect for the past and his love for bringing people together was instrumental in the formation of the first Threshing Days in 1973. It has continued to grow and become recognized as one of the premier parades in the Tri-State area. Ray finally served as Grand Marshall for the 1994 Threshing Days Parade. Ray loved music and began playing drums at the early age of 14. He had his own band, the Tyrolians, which he called "The Biggest Little Band in Iowa." He continued to fill in on the drums for the Toe Tappers in recent years. Ray died September 17, 1994 at his home in Waukon. He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church and a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. Ray was a director at Waukon State Bank, a position he held since 1983. Ray's example was very instrumental, as his children have followed his footsteps into the Farm and Home Stores, Sweeney Auction Service, drums, banking, antique cars, antique tractors, horses, etc. Preceeding Ray in death was Monica, and three of their children: John, Mary and Rose; his parents; brothers, Ralph and Leonard, and sisters, Helen Smorstad and Rita Sweeney. Surviving are 11 children, including six sons: Jan, Joe, Jerry and Jeff, all of Waukon, Jim of Waterville, and Jake of Monona; five daughters, Jane Johanningmeyer of Monona, Julie Fisk of Monona, Joan Manning of Mable, MN, Judy Lubahn of Winona, MN, and Jean Ann Sweeney of Monona; 31 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Eldo (Ceil) Johanningmeyer of Monona, Mrs. Lester (Rosella) Henderson of Monona, Mrs. Lowell (Evelyn) Fossum of Marion, and Mrs. Gladwin (Darlene) Anderson of Waukon.
