Peters passed away Dec. 28, 2001 in Tecumseh, Neb. He was born Sept. 5, 1913 on the family farm 3 miles west of Elk Creek to Gustav and Clara (Buethe) Peters. He was baptized Sept. 28, 1913 by Rev. H.F. Grupe and confirmed May 29, 1927 by Rev. I.C. Heinicke at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. He attended St. Peter's Parochial School and Elk Creek High School through 10th grade. He was united in marriage to Marion Nelson at the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minn. on Oct. 20, 1951. Ray lived on the family farm for 76 years until 1989 when he and Marion moved to the farm northwest of Tecumseh. Raymond farmed all of his adult life. He enjoyed seeing the crops and livestock growing and prospering. The Peter's farm has been in the family since 1861. In 1962 they received the Aksarben award for a farm being in the family for 100 years. Conservation of soil and water were very important to him as ponds, terraces, and waterways were constructed on the farm. He served on the Johnson County Soil and Conservation Board from 1957-1982, was on the Johnson County Fair Board over 35 years, Johnson County Hospital Board of Directors for 17 years, Extension Board for 2- 3 year terms, Southeast Quad County Pork Producers and NC+ Seed Corn Dealer for 34 years and a member of Johnson County Farm Bureau since 1952. Ray participated in State hand-husking contests in 1939-41 and after WWII when the contests were resumed. He placed 1st or 2nd in several contests between 1985-1996. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, where he served on the Finance Committee for 3 years, an elder for 6 years, and as an usher. He was a charter member of the Lutheran Layman's League. He served as a member of the committee to revise the church constitution and on the 125th Anniversary Committee. Ray and Marion enjoyed two trips to Europe in 1976 and 1988 visiting the ancestral homes of their parents in Germany and Sweden. Ray was a devoted family man and enjoyed his grandchildren. He enjoyed sports, especially basketball and football. He is survived by his wife Marion of Tecumseh; son Gary Peters and wife Kathy of Elk Creek; daughters Susan George and husband Tom of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and Shirley Allen and husband Mike of Cook; grandchildren Sean and Melissa Peters of Kearney; Derick Peters of U.S. Navy; Carrie and Trevor George of Cheyenne, Wyo.; MaKayla and Jesse Allen of Cook; and Jennifer Ward of Beatrice; great-grandchildren Jerrico and Tayler Ward of Beatrice; sisters: Ruth Hurst and husband Hudson of Camden, S.C.; and Eleanor Gottula of Tecumseh; and sister-in-law Ruby Peters of Tecumseh. Ray was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Orval and Rueben; and sister Alma Carmine. Services were held January 1, 2002 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Elk Creek, Neb. with Rev. Robert Schermbeck officiating. Music was provided by organist: Loretta Kerchel. Pallbearers were Roger Peters, Rodney Helberg, Lonny Peters, Willis Buethe, Wayne Bergmeyer, and Ray Bartels. Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Lillich, Wilbur Othmer, T.J. Peters, Ronald Buethe, LeRoy Peters, William Buethe, Royce Peters, Eldon Buethe, LeRoy Covault, Roger Woltemath, and Lorain Krueger. Interment was in the St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Elk Creek, Neb. (The Pawnee Republican, Pawnee City, Neb.-January 17, 2002)
