Rude's Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be directed to Ascension Lutheran Church, Brookings Area Habitat for Humanity, the Boys & Girls Club of Brookings, or a charity of your choice in Ray's name. Ray was born to Albert and Mabel (Strand) Ofstedal on their farm near Frederick, SD. He and his twin sister, Ruth, were the last of four children; he was the only boy. Ray spent his first eight years of schooling at a country school near his home. He attended high school in Ellendale, ND, with the help of his sister, Marion. He completed an Associate's Degree in Mechanical Engineering at the community college in Willmar, MN. In 1949, Ray began dating Sylvia Melland and they were married at Aurdal Lutheran Church on June 13, 1951. Ray won her over by bidding $28 for her apple pie at a community social. They started their life together on a farm near Frederick, SD. The first of their children, Peter, was born in 1954 and the second, Marc, followed a year later in 1955. In 1957 they decided to give up farming and moved to Willmar, MN, where Ray took a job at the power plant. Their third and last child, Mary Beth, was born in Willmar in 1961. In 1964 they made their final move to Brookings, SD, where Ray took a job with the Brookings Hospital for several years, before hiring on with 3-M when they opened a plant there in 1971. Ray retired from 3-M in January 1987, but continued to stay active with part-time work and volunteer work until just a few years ago. Among his favorite volunteer activities were his work with the Brookings Area Habitat for Humanity and the Solar Ovens Partners. Ray and Sylvia were long-time members at Ascension Lutheran Church and Ray was active in the Golden K. They were proud of their Norwegian heritage and were active members in the Brookings Sons of Norway Chapter and with the Norwegian dance group. Ray was a self-taught master craftsman, building everything from barns and fine furniture to remote-controlled airplanes and Norwegian inspired housewares. He was also talented with a sewing needle and stitched several cross-stitch designs in his later years. He loved the challenge of a good jigsaw puzzle and playing cribbage and other card games. He discovered a flair for cooking and gardening late in life and enjoyed trying out new recipes that he found on the Internet. Ray is survived by his children, Peter (Pat) Ofstedal of Breese, IL, Marc (Lisa) Ofstedal of Ballwin, MO and Mary Beth Ofstedal (Mick Couper) of Ann Arbor, MI; his grandchildren, Kristin Fonseca, Alexandra Bauer, Blake Ofstedal and Emily (Brett) Mertens; by one great grandchild, Olivia Fonseca; his twin sister, Ruth Swedlund, brother-in-law, Dean (Anna) Melland and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia; his parents, Albert and Mabel; his sisters, Marion (Bud) Matson and Sylvia (Bud) Durheim; and his brother-in-law, Lyle Swedlund.
