Description	:	Reta Jean Knudsen-Conner was born on November 7th, 1925. She passed away on November 12th, 2009 at the Pineview Good Samartian Center. She was the first of five children to live, her parents were Eugene and Bessie (Triplett) Knudsen of Rural Cherry County. Reta was born in Gordon, NE, at 2 pounds 6oz she was a determined infant and survived in spite of the odds. Sleeping in a shoebox on the oven door or outside in the screen porch for fresh air. She passed away on November 12th, 2009 at the Pineview Good Samartian Center. She was the first of five children to live, her parents were Eugene and Bessie (Triplett) Knudsen of Rural Cherry County. Reta was born in Gordon, NE, at 2 pounds 6oz she was a determined infant and survived in spite of the odds. Sleeping in a shoebox on the oven door or outside in the screen porch for fresh air. Reta attended rural school traveling by a horse drawn cart to school, with her siblings and other neighbor kids. She completed two years of correspondence studies to begin her secondary education and was determined to continue her education in Curtis, NE. Two years later she graduated as an Aggie at Curtis High School in 1943. She completed Normal Training to be a teacher and taught at Rural Cherry County Schools. Reta married the love of her life, Alfred Louis Conner, in Gordon, NE on July 7th, 1945, to this union 3 children were born, Gary Lee, Diana Lynn, and Keith Allen. She was proud of her Danish heritage. They made their home on the Penbrook creek along the Niobrara River, seven miles South of Sparks, NE. The Tillson place had been in the family for many years and Alfred's Mom; Carrie Tillson-Conner lived with them there. Reta and Carrie picked berries, gardened, cooked and worked together raising the children. Alfred and Reta raised range and dairy cattle, hogs, and chickens. For entertainment Reta often spoke of popping corn, loading up the kids, going to the drive-in movies in Valentine, playing cards and dancing until sunrise. She was a loving, kind and giving Mom, Grandma, Sister, Aunt, and friend. Reta was known for her beautiful knit sweater jackets, intricately crocheted dollies and other handcrafted items. She worked in the kitchen at the Valentine Sale barn. In the late 70's they moved to the Arabia Ranch, where Reta continued to garden and took care of the many tenant lawns. They semi-retired and returned to their home place on the river in the early 1980's, where they ran AC Canoes and Campground. Reta moved to Valentine after Alfred's death in 1992 where she become an active volunteer at the Valentine Senior Center and took many tours throughout the United States. She moved to Cherry Hills Estates for three years, after her eightieth birthday she moved to Pineview Good Samartian Center where she passed away. Reta was baptized and confirmed a member of the United Methodist Church of Valentine on March 19, 1967. She enjoyed being a part of Boy Scouts, 4-H, Sparks Ladies Extension Club, and The American Legion Auxiliary. Reta was preceded in death by her husband Alfred, parents, 4 infant siblings, sister Colleen Parkhurst and brother Calvin Knudsen. She is survived by her children Gary (Edna) Conner, of Valentine, Diana (Larry) Ostrander, of Crookston, and Keith (Sally) Conner of Valentine. Grandchildren Cory and husband Tony Hudson, Shawn Conner, Courtney Ostrander and wife Tracy, Aaron Ostrander and friend Pam, Alan Conner and Quin Conner. Great Grandchildren Brittany Ostrander, Angel Ostrander, Deven Ostrander. Sister Caroline (Don) Parkhurst, Valentine, NE, Dorothy Conner, Gordon, NE, Theodora Mills, Omaha, NE, Martha Boyer, Mullen, Darrel (Carol) Parkhurst, Valentine, NE first cousin Glen Knudsen of Kolding Denmark, many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Funeral services were held at 11:00am at the Valentine United Methodist Church on Monday November 16th, 2009 with Pastor Tom Lucas and Pastor Noah O'Dell officiating. Burial followed at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Memorials may be made to the family.
