Description	:	The Reverend Benton Field was the second of eleven children, and first son, born to Jeremiah Field (c.1764-1830) and Eleanor Sherwood (1776-1859) of Randolph County, NC. He became a Methodist minister in 1829, and moved to Leaksville, Rockingham County, NC in 1841. A history of the Leaksville Methodist Church states: "Although he was not the Methodist preacher in charge, he became a leader of the Methodist forces here and preached often in the Old Brick Academy. Read More	The Reverend Benton Field was the second of eleven children, and first son, born to Jeremiah Field (c.1764-1830) and Eleanor Sherwood (1776-1859) of Randolph County, NC. He became a Methodist minister in 1829, and moved to Leaksville, Rockingham County, NC in 1841. A history of the Leaksville Methodist Church states: "Although he was not the Methodist preacher in charge, he became a leader of the Methodist forces here and preached often in the Old Brick Academy. The church took on new life under his leadership. He kept a famous tavern, was a builder and operator of mills, a land surveyor, and a useful magistrate. He had five sons and a daughter." (There were actually six sons and a daughter.) Benton was also one of the first trustees of the Greensborough Female College (now Greensboro College) when it was founded in 1837. Benton married three times: First, in 1819, to Jane Gamble, second, in 1824, to Martha F. Guerrant (1803-1856), daughter of Thomas Porter Guerrant and Elizabeth Spain Ellington, and third, in 1857, to Lucy Christmas Hopper (1821-1893), daughter of Jesse Hopper and Martha Grogan, and the widow of Joseph Lane. His children, all but the last born of Martha Guerrant, were: Thomas William Field (1828-1886, m. Margaret Moir), Rev. Daniel Early Field (1832-1916, m. Jane Hopper Lane, 2. m. Martha Ann "Pattie" Lane), Dr. Benton Jeremy Field (1835-1904, m. E. Magdalene Guerrant, 2. m. Lucy Elizabeth "Bettie" Lane), Peter Watson Field (1836-1855), John Emory Field (1838-1866, m. Mary Susan Lane, 2. m. Josephine Jones) Eleanor Elizabeth "Lizzie" Field (c.1839-1880, m. William A. Carter) and Charles Fletcher Field (1861-1942, m. Lizzie Stout).
