Read More	The Reverend Charlie Davis Garner When The Reverend Charlie Davis Garner was born on September 9, 1891, in Union, South Carolina, his father, Samuel, was 21 and his mother, Nannie, was 20. He was the second born child of Samuel and Nannie. He was the husband of Vinnie Rebecca Sanders Garner and the father of Miriam and Charlene Garner. He was ordained as a Christian Minister at the Mt. Joy Baptist Church on April 9, 1914 at the age of 23. He was a 1922 graduate of Furman University. He was an older single student at Furman graduating at the age of 31. During his time at Furman, Charlie was a supply pastor at Peter's Creek Baptist Church and Nine Forks Baptist Church in Pickens County, SC. After graduating Furman University he attended and graduated from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. While at Southern Seminary, Charlie studied under two of the country's leading religious scholars, A.T Robertson (New Testament) and E.Y. Mullins (Theology). Charlie and Vinnie Sanders were married in June, 1925. The following announcement appeared in the May 12, 1925 Newberry SC Observer: Garner, Charles Davis Rev. of Union SC will marry Ms. Vinnie Rebecca Sanders daughter of T. R. Sanders of Old Town in June. The bride teaches School at Glenn Springs and the groom is the pastor of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Union. Observer 5/12/1925, p8 Charlie was the pastor of several churches during his pastoral career. The Churches he served included a church in Indiana (probably during his seminary years), Tabernacle Baptist Church in Union, SC (1925-1927), Ware Shoals First Baptist (1928 - March 1934), Old Bethel Baptist Church in Woodruff, Second Baptist Church Anderson (Which later was named Garner Memorial Baptist Church in memory of Charlie's ministry there), and Barker's Creek Baptist Church in Honea Path (1944). Charlie was serving as pastor of Barker's Creek at the time of his death in July of 1944. He had been at Barker's Creek for only a few months. Charlie died at the young age of 53 after having a sudden and massive brain hemorrhage, leaving two very young children and his wife. His daughter Charlene was one of 11 children who were killed in the December 18, 1946 bus-train tragedy in Silverstreet, SC. His second-born daughter Miriam was badly injured in the wreck and was never able to walk again. He is buried near his wife Vinnie and his two children in the Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery in the Pea Ridge section of Union County SC. GARNER Honea Path Minister Dies After Brief Illness: Rites Set Today ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Union, July 18 - The Reverend Charlie Davis Garner, 53, pastor of Barker's Creek Baptist Church at Honea Path died today at his home at Silver Street after a three day illness. Funeral services will be conducted at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Mount Joy Baptist Church at Kelton by the Reverend J.S. Graham, assisted by the Reverend J.S. Cobb. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Deacons of Buck Creek Baptist Church and the Second Baptist Church of Anderson will serve as an honorary escort. Active pallbearers will be Walter, Leroy, Everette, Clement, Emmett and Seth Garner. The body will be at the home at Silver Street until 3 p.m. when the funeral party will leave for the church. Reverend Garner was a graduate of Furman University and the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He was ordained on April 9, 1914 at the Mount Joy Baptist Church. He had served pastorates in Indiana, in Union and Spartanburg counties, in Ware Shoals and at the Second Baptist Church in Anderson, SC. Mr. Garner was a son of the late S.R. and Nannie Garner. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Vinnie Sanders Garner; two daughters. Misses Charlene and Miriam Frances Garner, of the home. Four sisters; Mrs. R.B. Adams of Union route 3, Mrs. J.W. Sinclair of Inman and Mrs. Viola Garner and Mrs. Ralph Lancaster of Silver Street; four brothers, S.C. Garner of East Flat Rock, N.C., M.V., Fant and Bunyan Garner of Union.
