Goern Norbeck ~~Goeran Norbeck as in attendance at the last meeting of the Hauges Synod, at St. Paul, Minn., Jun 6-8, 1917. On the last day of the meeting he took part in the discussion of the Union proposition and expressed himself as a strong advocate of the union of the three branches of the Norwegian Lutheran church, namely: Hauges Synod, Norwegian Synod and the United church. ~~On June 9th he headed the procession of pastors and delegates that marched from the Armory to the St. Paul Auditorium. Alongside of the pioneer pastor and lay worker walked his son, Gov. Peter Norbeck, banner bearer for Hauges Synod. ~~On his return trip from St. Paul, he laid his route past Windom, Minnesota, where he was to meet Mrs. Norbeck. Together they then visited at two of Mrs. Norbeck's daughters, Mrs. Barteldon, Windom, Minn., and Mrs. L. Larson, Ballaton, Minn. From there they left for Ruthton, Minn. While visiting with Mrs. Norbeck's granddaughter, Mrs. Hjermstad, the Reverend suffered a light stroke of paralysis. Although this was a very slight attack, other complications set in and after about three weeks illness he quietly passed away on the 17 day of July, 1917, and to his reward as a faithful steward over the manifold gifts of God. ~~Goeran Norbeck was born at Alsen, Jemptland, Sweden, Oct. 13, 1836. In the year of 1854 he came to Norway. Here he was converted and worked as lay preacher from 1892 (this is the year provided in the newspaper article) to 1866. Imigratee to America in 1866. He spent two years at LaCrosse, Wis., homesteaded in Clay county, So. Dak., in 1868 and continued as lay preacher from 1868 to 1885. Moved to Charles Mix County in 1885 and was ordained to the Holy Ministry in the same year. Rev. Norbeck served in the capacity of pastor in the Norwegian Lutheran churches, of this vicinity, from 1885 to 1900. He moved to the city of Platte in 1904 and again worked as pastor of Tabor Lutheran church from 1908 to December 31, 1911. The present pastor, Rev. M.B. Lokkesmoe taking charge of the work Jan. 1, 1912. In October, 1914 Rev. and Mrs. Norbeck took up their residence at the Old People's Home at Beresford S.D. Here the Rev. served as house chaplain up to the time of his death. Thus he was active in the Master's service until his dying hour. ~~Rev. Norbeck was united in marriage to Karen Larson in 1869. In 1894 she was summoned to the Better Land. In the year 1895 he was again married to Mrs. Oluffina Sletvold. ~~Left to mourn the loss of a Christian husband and father are: Mrs. Goeran Norbeck, his devoted and loving wife, his brother Ole, at Old People's Home, Beresford, S.D.; his three sons, Peter, Pierre, S.D.; George, Redfield, S.D.; and Enoch, Platte, S.D.; and two daughters, Emma, Mrs. Martin Anderson, Clairmont, S.D.; Laura, Mrs. Mathias Hogan, Geddes, S.D. Three sons and five daughters of Mrs. Norbeck as follows: Oden, Sioux City, Ia.; John, Canton, S.D.; Fred, Oakes, N.D.; Anna, Mrs. L. Larson, Ballaton, Minn.; Nettie, Mrs. Barteldon, Windom, Minn., Cora, Mrs. Ole Berg, Corsica, S.D.; Magda, Mrs. M. Sletton, Gregory, S.D., Helga, Mrs. W. Bartman, Springfield, S.D. All the children are married. Numerous other relatives also remain to mourn the loss of a kind counselor. ~~The remains arrived in Platte on Thursday evening, July 19th, and interment took place in the Bloomington cemetery on the Friday afternoon following. Services were held at Tabor Lutheran church at 1 p.m. The funeral sermon, proper, being spoken by Rev. Lokkesmoe, pastor of the local church, Rev. J.A. Quello, of Sioux City, Iowa, spoke in behalf of the Norwegian church of America, having been sent to represent the church by the President, Dr. Stub. He also brought words of consolation in behalf of the Board of Trustees, of which Gov. Peter Norbeck was a member. Rev. Jacobson, of Redfield, S.D., spoke a few words in closing and brought the greetings of Our Saviour's church of Redfield S.D., of which church he is pastor. The services then continued at the Bloomington church. Rev. J.J. Sharpness, of Centerville, S.D., spoke in behalf of the Old People's Home, Beresford, S.d., of which institution he is pastor. Rev. I.S. Olson, pastor of the Frankes Congregation, at Old Bloomington, J.A. Quello and L.C. Jacobson, also spoke kind words to the memory of the departed brother. The choirs of both churches rendered appropriate songs. ~~The floral tributes were numerous and were sent by relatives, churches and friends, also from the Norwegian Lutheran church of America, by Rev. J.A. Quello, a representative of the church. The last rites at the grave were read by Re. Lokkesmoe, according to the request of the departed brother. The relatives of both Reverend and Mrs. Norbeck were all in attendance at the funeral, with the exception of Mrs. Barteldon, who it is reported, was hindered from coming on time on account of a train wreck. ~~A letter from Rev. J.N. Lohre, of Grand Forks, No.Dak., Secretary of the Norwegian Lutheran church of America, expressing his regret of not being able to be in attendance at the funeral of Rev. Norbeck and containing a personal message of consolation based on Mathew 25:21, to be read at the funeral services, arrived too late. Also a floral wreath ordered sent by Rev. and Mrs. Lohre, which in accordance to their personal request, should have been placed on the bier by the local pastor, M. B. Lokkesmoe, did not arrive here in time. ~~Rev. Norbeck lived a christian life and was blessed with a long day of service in the Lard's vineyard. He was loved by his relatives and friends and was respected by the foes of the church. He is dead and still he lives, lives in the Realms of the Saved, and lives in the hearts of those who knew him and listed (listened?) to his public as well as private messages. George Norbeck, father of Governor Peter Norbeck, died at Tyler, Minn., Tuesday afternoon, July 17, at the age of 81 years. He had been a resident of South Dakota since 1868, coming here from Jomland (Jemptland), Sweden, and homesteading in Clay county. As a pioneer minister of the Norwegian Lutheran church, he was active throughout his life in Christian circles, and had done much to establish a church of this faith in South Dakota. He was twice honored by being chosen as a member, first of the territorial legislature in 1873, and second of the state legislature in 1890. **For the past several years Rev Mr. Norbeck had made his home at Hereford, and was visiting relatives in Tyler, Minn., when the end came. He was a layman and Lutheran Church organizer. He had a great vision and great understanding and devoted his life to helping others especially in bringing his fellowman nearer to God.
