John Horton died at the home of his son, George, Dec. 9, 1904 at 1:20 p.m., after an illness of seven weeks, aged 70 years, 2 months and 27 days. He was born in Morgan county, Illinois, Sept. 13, 1834. He moved with his parents, Urias and Sarah Horton, near Salina, Jefferson county, Iowa, in 1839 where he grew to manhood. He was converted at the age of 17 and afterwards entered the ministry of the M.E. church at that place. He was married to Mrs. Almira Holloway (sic. Holloway was her first married surname, NOT her maiden name) Oct. 25, 1877 (sic. married in Jefferson county, Iowa). They then moved to Osborn Co. (sic. Osborne, Co.), Kansas, returning to Missouri in 1893. They were the parents of two children: one died in infancy, leaving an only son, George, residing in Nodaway Co., Mo., and J.T. Holloway (sic. adult child of Almira by her first marriage), of What Cheer, Iowa. His wife died three years ago and since that time he had made his home with his son, George. Mr. Horton was the last member of a family of 8 children. He was a man of upright character and of influence in his home community. He enjoyed the entire confidence of all who knew him and his passing away is that of an excellent man and citizen. Funeral services were held at the Mt. Pleasant church Sunday morning at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. Bolen. Funeral texts were Isaiah 38:1, and Hebrews 11, 13:16. He was laid to rest in the Oak Grove cemetery. ---------- Note: Rev. Horton was buried in Oak Grove cemetery, evidently the one in Henry county, Iowa, but he does not have a headstone that is known for him. Whether or not he once had one and it is now missing isn't known. The cemetery has been fully photographed by Mo & Dave Gates for headstone photos, but based on the obituary this memorial is being made as not all early burials without headstones are accounted for. It isn't known what led to the choice of Oak Grove cemetery for his burial place, but there are a number of Holloway surnamed burials there and his wife's first husband was an Amos M. Holloway (though whether or not Amos was buried there isn't known, but a connection between Amos and the other Holloway's buried there is quite possible). Any clarification would be appreciated. His wife, Almira Stolabarger Holloway/Horton was first married on March 2, 1860 to Amos M. Holloway in Jefferson county, Iowa. Amos died March 2, 1862 at Camp Harlan in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Where he was buried has yet to be determined; there are a number of Holloway burials in Oak Grove cemetery so it is entirely possible that he was buried in an unmarked grave there. They had one child, a J. T. Holloway, presumably a son. What happened to J. T. Holloway? Almira was buried in Shearer cemetery, Braddyville, Page county, Iowa. Why she is buried there isn't clear either. Any clarification would be appreciated. ------------- Interesting family trivia - A granddaughter, Dorothy M Horton, was instrumental in the development and distribution of many educational texts for children, including the famed "Dick and Jane" series originated by William S. Gray. Those texts were used by many students from the 1930's into the 1960's and should be familar to any Baby Boomers.
