Mueller of Norfolk is Taken by Death Dies Unexpectedly After Heart Attack; Was 92 The Rev. J. P. Mueller, 92, Norfolk's oldest retired minister, died unexpectedly about 11:30 o'clock last night after suffering a heart attack at his home 1108 South Fourth street. He was born March 30, 1854, at Saarbourg, Lorraine, France, where he went to the French-German school until his parents immigrated into Upper Canada in 1866. There he attended a German Lutheran parochial school and a public school until 1870, when he entered a printing office and worked at the printing business three years. In September 1873, he enrolled at Concordia college, St. Louis, Mo. The following year he entered Concordia Seminary, Springfield, Ill., from which he graduated in June, 1878, and entered the ministry of the German Evangelical Lutheran synod of Missouri, Ohio and other states. First Charge at Lyons His first charge was near Lyons, which he served as pastor and parochial school teacher from September, 1878, until March, 1881. Then he followed a call to Scribner, where he spent seven and a half years, serving two congregations and two preaching stations. After a repeated call he moved to Norfolk in September, 1888, and took charge of Christ Lutheran church, which he served until his resignation in March, 1922, on account of ill health. When he became pastor of the Norfolk church it had forty-three voting members. Under his guidance the church grew and at the end of his pastorate it had 220 voters. In 1925, Mr. Mueller became chaplain of the Lutheran hospital in Norfolk, and served in that capacity for eleven years, retiring in November, 1936, when he was 82 years old. Married in 1878 He was married Nov. 26, 1878, at Fisherville, Ont., Can., to Anna Catherine Abert. Mrs. Mueller died a few years ago. Surviving are five sons and daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Elsasser, Norfolk; Mrs. Eleanor Marshall, Omaha; Miss Anna W. Mueller, Sioux City; Theodore Mueller, assistant postmaster, Norfolk, and William, Huron, S. D. ; a number of grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Funeral rites will probably be held Wednesday. Mueller More than 400 persons assembled yesterday afternoon at Christ Lutheran church to honor the memory of the Rev. J. P. Mueller, 92, Norfolk's oldest retired minister, for whom funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Theo Harms, pastor, assisted by other Lutheran ministers. The Rev. M. F. Scheips, Pierce, gave the address at rites held at the home, 1108 South Fourth street. Mr. Harms gave the German address at the church, the Rev. O. C. Decker, Battle Creek, district vice president, the one in English and the Rev. H. A. Hilpert, Norfolk, the farewell and benediction. Hymns were sung by the choir directed by G. Bode. Burial at Norfolk The Rev. H. F. W. Schulz, Wakefield, had charge of the committal in New Lutheran cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were the Revs. E. J. Boelling, Daniel Gimbel and Arthur Schwartz, all of Norfolk; H. H. Sagehorn, Tilden; A. J. Bode and W. J. Oetting, both of Madison. Honorary pallbearers were the Revs. W. C. Rehwaldt, John Witt and W. W. Gieschen, all of Norfolk; E. Oelschlager, West Point, and A. Ollenburg, Bloomfield. Other Lutheran pastors attending were the Revs. J. Harms, Lyons; O. E. Schlecht, M. Gerike and C. A. Reimnitz, all of Wisner; A. Allman, Battle Creek, and the Rev. Mr. Schmidt, Meadow Grove. More than $250 was given in memorial wreaths in honor of the veteran pastor's memory. Born March 30, 1854, at Saarbourg, Lorraine, France, he moved to Canada in 1866, and to the United States in 1873 when he started studying for the ministry. His first charge was near Lyons, where he served from 1878 to 1881. He then went to Scribner, where he spent seven and a half years. He accepted a call to Christ Lutheran church at Norfolk in 1888, and served until his resignation in 1922. Baptized 1,336 Persons During his pastorage in Norfolk, he baptized 1,336, confirmed 968, married 323 couples and officiated at 433 funerals. He attended services regularly until he was 91 years old, and a special delight in the late years of his life came when he heard his grandson, Lyle Mueller, Norfolk, preach his first sermon. Mr. Mueller was married Nov. 26, 1878, to Anna Catherine Ebert, who died in 1939. Surviving are five sons and daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Elsasser, Norfolk; Mrs. Eleanor Marshall, Omaha; Miss Ann W. Mueller, Sioux City; Theodore, assistant postmaster at Norfolk; and William, Huron, S. D.; fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
