Cherokee Sentinel on the Border, Dec. 21, 1888, page 2: Obituary Lars Larson was born in the Stockhom Dist., Sweden, January 22, 1812, where he lived until 1848, when he came to America and located in Iowa. From Iowa he moved to Kansas in 1865, where after moving from point to point two or three times he finally permanently located in Cherokee. He was married to Margaret Johnson on the 20th of October, 1839, in Sweden. To them were born four children, all of whom reached the age of maturity and all have families. He first received the sacrament in the Lutheran Church, the state church of Sweden, on the 24th of June 1824. He was converted and joined the M.E. Church in Iowa in 1852. Some five or six years later -- about 1857 -- he was licensed to exhort, and after that to preach. He was ordained a deacon at Ft. Scott, Kansas, March 6, 1873, and that year traveled and preached among the Swedes who lived in the region of the territory embracing Emporia and Chanute. It was the end of the above year that he permanently located in Cherokee. Since his residence here he has often gone into the surrounding country to tell the people the Story of the Cross. He was not a fluent speaker, when preaching, in Eng., owing largely perhaps to the fact that he learned it late in life and did not have a good command of English words. But those who have heard and understood him when he preached in the Swedish language, have said that his sermons were both fluent and instructive. Whether in Swede or English, his sermons were quite instructive and acceptable. He was always earnest, sincere and faithful. His everyday life was consistent. All these tended to give force to what he said. Two years since Father Larson was able to be out both by day and by night, and this ability he proved by attending a series of meetings which were held in the M.E. Church at this place. But before that time his strength had begun to fail. This he often told us in our social meetings. Many times he has said the end of life was near, but he did not tell it sadly; he seemed to have no regrets; he spoke with the voice of a victor; he shouted his triumph as he went; he looked not back at the past but joyfully anticipated the future. At one time he said, "When I am unable to speak I want to hold up my hand as an evidence that I am saved." Father Larson suffered but little pain during his illness. Though recently quite helpless there seemed to be no sign of any intense pain. He died without a struggle, being conscious to the last. His last words were spoken to his son-in-law, Mr. Warner.
