Lawrence Wempe, retired Catholic priest The Rev. Lawrence Wempe, 80, a longtime Catholic priest in the Archdiocese of Washington, died July 16 of complications from lung and heart disease at the Carroll Manor Nursing Home in Hyattsville. Father Wempe, a priest since 1936, was pastor of five parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington before retiring in 1980. His first assignment was at Sacred Heart, where he was an associate pastor for 16 years. In 1952, he was appointed pastor of St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish in Indian Head. He was named dean of the clergy of Charles and St. Mary's counties in 1954. In 1955, he was transferred to St. Mary's Parish in Landover Hills, serving there until being appointed pastor of St. John Parish in Hollywood, Md., in 1966. Later that year, he was named pastor of St. Thomas More Parish in Washington, where he served until 1974, when he became pastor of St. Columba Parish. A Cumberland, Md., native, Father Wempe attended St. Charles College in Catonsville. He studied for the priesthood at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, receiving a degree in sacred theology. Father Wempe is survived by a brother, Leo Wempe, and three sisters, Helen Wempe, Josephine Coleman and Mary L. Minke, all of Cumberland.
