On the 1930 Old Fort, McDowell, NC census, I found Presbyterian Clergyman Mathew E Hansel, 56, VA born; wife Elizabeth J, 55, VA; daughters or sons: Margaret E, 26, WV; Cary J, 25, WV; Elizabeth J, 22, WV; M Ernest, Jr., 20, WV; H Harrison, 18, VA; V Jeanier, 16, VA; Holmes R, 14, WV and Elva J, 12, VA born. An affidavit by Dr. P A McLendon describes the auto accident he witnessed at the traffic light, that took the life of Rev. Dr. Mathew (sic) Ernest Hansel. It occurred on 3 Oct 1944 after it had lightly rained. The Rev. was crossing the street at Massachusetts Avenue, NW, from the south to north on 18th Street, NW. He was struck by a General Accounting Office truck and died instantly. Other data is included in this report. It is under his wife's name, Elisabeth Jones Hansel.
